I would just sign up for a one month free trial, just be sure to immediately cancel it so you won't be charged since $72 is still pretty steep.

This deal does not work if you have already signed up and are on your 1 month free trial or if you are already a Prime member. I'm 1 week into a Prime trial and tried to purchase this and no go. :-(
 
But once you buy it as a gift (for yourself) don't you have to start using it right away? How long can you hold onto this gift before you have to activate it?
 
Not for new members only. I bought myself a 'gift' and when I did, and went to activate it, it gave me $72 Amazon credit

I doubt this is true. It was originally $79 and I read they were taking a bath at that price point so they moved it to $99. To go to a lower price of $72 would not make sense unless they changed the benefits.
 
Two day shipping? Via USPS? If you expect them to ship via UPS or FedEx - good luck!
 
Even at $99 the Prime membership is a hell of a deal. I would not be surprised to see it go to $129 at some point. I've been a member since Prime started and I know I've paid for the fee a couple of times each year from my shipping alone.
 
Don't worry - they make their money back. Just received (3 day shipping by the way not 2 as advertised) a Roku 4 at full price that was previously used, fingerprints and all even the obligatory hair included! Amazon is just not what it used to be.
