I heard that GoDaddy owns your domain name once you register/host your site with them. So you have to stay with them or lose your domain name.
Can anyone verify if they still do that ?

That's false. You own the domain. You just pay GoDaddy the money to register it. You can move your domain to any registrar any time you wish. The three domains I own have been moved around to at least three different registrar over the years.

It's not working for ether. I'll mark the coupon as dead.

I agree with Kage, with godaddy, you own it. And actually if you pay multiple years in advance, you own it for those future years too. With other domain registrars, even if you pay 5 years to them in advance, they only shell out the money each year. There may be others that do this too, but I know that 1and1 did not.

I registered my domain with 1&1.com. I think it cost me $20.00 for the year for that plus their basic 5 e-mail address deal. IMNSHO well worth the cost for the cool factor.

I've tried GoDaddy, 1&1, and Dotster.com. Of those, I've found NameCheap.com to be the absolute best with an excellent interface. And the price is right with internet coupons.

I am renting a site in 1and1, I don't even need to worry about the domain registration renewal and fees as long as I am using the service.
