not worth the money

you can get a better deal than this notebook.
also dell laptops suck:
bad keyboard design
bad charger design and the cord is short
the audio plug is on the side far to the right
the dvd player is on the left hand side???!!!
a little too bulky but light
i personally don't like the design

get acer!

I like Dells. I think the current generation (white/silver/black) is very solid, unlike previous generations.

I have an Inspiron 6000, now known as the E1505. It stays cool, has good battery life (only an 11% wear rate after over a year), is reasonably light for its size, and is well designed. It also seems more durable than any other laptop I've handled, but I like to treat laptops very tenderly anyway.

Contrast this to my 600m (which belongs to the previous generation). It idles over SIXTY degrees (F) hotter, has a terrible keyboard, is poorly designed, and is very flimsy. My brother broke the lid closing sensor while wiping the keyboard. So I know what a bad laptop is and I know that current Inspirons are good. =)

I would jump on this deal if it were a smaller laptop. Mine is 15.4" and I've learned my lesson: small is good.

Look, any laptop design is a compromise somewhere. With regard to the above:

- When was the last time you saw a laptop keyboard that was good ?

- Total cord length on my Dell is somwhere in the neighborhood of 8'. How long is enough?

- The audio plug and DVD locations are designed to allow you to put the machine in a "stand-up" holder and still have access to both.

- Tastes differ on designs.

There may be better or worse deals, but this remains a decent machine for the price. Pointers to those better deals would be appreciated.

Acer ? Seriously - Acer ?!

If you had said "Thinkpad" or "VAIO" or "Toshiba" then I would agree.

Seriously, what innovations (or brand-specific) items have Acer put out since the laptop was 'created' ? Sony had the integrated MS slot. Thinkpad had two ways to use a mouse (touchpad or the 'red dot'), and Toshiba has always had great MTBF equipment.

I lump Acer and eMachines in the same category.

Dell is affordable and that's what Michael Dell had originally envisioned when he started selling "affordable" computers from his College dormitory.

Look at the recent shake-ups at Dell. Michael is now back in control and realizing that trying to get into the "server" industry was a bad idea. He's focusing back on the "reliability at an affordable price" business module.

Acer.... wow - that came from left field....

I was recently in an Allstate estimators office where this guy constantly said "Chevy sucks... and the Corvette is a P-O-S"... then the estimator told me he was visiting her because his KIA was in an accident.

Imagine that... a KIA owner blasting the Corvette.

Acer-haters step off

I have an Acer TravelMate that replaced a stolen HP. It wasn't until I got the Acer that I realized how junky the HP actually was. This thing is solid, light, the keyboard actually IS laid out well (curved, more natural fitting to your hands), and has never puked on me in the year I've had it. Everyone thinks Acer sucks and it's the best computer I've ever had, period.

I had a dell 600m, which was one of the worst computers I have ever owned. I mean COMPUTER, not laptop, not desktop, not pc, but out of all of the computers I have ever owned, including desktops, laptops, pcs, compaqs, hps, apples, toshibas, hps, the dell 600m was by far the worst
It was so flimsy and ran hotter than an oven. The preocessor also ran slower than a 500 mhz computer made 10 years ago. I am turned off to dell products forever. Unless I randomly decide to try another dell computer, and it turns out that they have made an improvement.

Get a compaq laptop, compaq makes the best computers for their price. (hp is okay, but compaq is a lot better. yes, i realize they are the same company)

dell sucks.

E1505

I got the E1505 for cheap back in September, and it was great. At the time I was really turned off by my previous Dell but couldn't resist the price. Unfortunately, someone broke into my apartment and stole it. It's my third laptop in a year that's been stolen.

I think I'll back off for a while.

Hm, good deal for college :D

My brother used his Dell laptop as a lamp all night at the dorm by turning the brightness all the way up and eventually blew the backlight. Dell wanted to charge 500 dollars to fix it even though the computer was 4 years old and was only worth ~300 dollars.
