How to pick a good watermelon
Summer is here and I always have a hard time picking a watermelon at the groceries. I did a little research and here is what you should watch for to get a sweet watermelon.
- Tap the watermelon with your knuckles and listen for a hollow sound - There should be little color contrast between the green stripes - The end should be going from white to light yellow - Press your thumbs into the skin from all angles. It should be hard all around. Days until Black Friday Battle Last edited by Scoopons; 06-17-2007 at 02:26 AM. |

Also, the stem should still be green. If it's brown and withered, that thing's been off the vine too long

Also, buy your produce from local farms or farmers markets. They are usually the same price or cheaper than grocery stores and they are much fresher.

Trader Joes lets you bring back food if you don't like it.
Being Deaf, I just ask them to find me a nice melon. They know how to do that. I bet other produce clerks do too. |

at least you are living up to your avatar Butty!
![]() Hubby does the watermelon picking....he and Kad love it, I dont though. I really (and truly, not like some people ) wish I liked watermelon. It looks so juicy and refreshing on a hot summer day.

if you pat it like you would a drum, it should be bouncy. Like it's got a bit of elasticity to it, it should feel like a very hard spring. When there's no bouncy feel to it, it means it's been soaked in moisture or it's too dry. Either way, it's not gonna have the right moisture.
Trust me, I'm a doctor. |

So what are the best varieties?
I think those with seeds are slightly sweeter, but no can buy them. |

I like "Ice Box" seedless watermelons. (Not sure if that is the real name or a name we use here in the south)
