A good guitar will have its strings just barely grazing the fingerboard. They require very little finger pressure to depress the string.

A cheap instrument will have its strings maybe a third inch above the fingerboard. ...much harder to press. Its okay at the lower frets near the tuning pegs but gets tough at higher registers.

If your fingers hurt and the instrument buzzes then you will not have fun. This is what happens with an inexpensive guitar.

I learned on an acoustic Yamaha. ' got it for $50 at a hardware store! I then bought a used Fender Jaguar for $150 and then a new Stratocaster for $800.

i think an acoustic with nylon sounds like crap, get a steel stringed model or an electric.

You don't need to get an amp, get a headphone amp and/or plug it into a set of powered computer speakers.

Here is a good link www.americanmusical.com

They will send you a nice catalog containing lots of guitars and prices...good stuff

There's also web sites to help you tune your guitar and learn to play too. Search for them.

    that's what's confusing

    thanks for the website.

as soon as i get the catalogue, i will order a guitar.

see the thing is that i will have to order it online coz i haven't seen many stores around. hardly any one.

plus i don't want to buy a bad one u know. i love guitar, so i want a good one, so that i can enjoy playing it. and on the internet i can't make a choice due to i am a novice right now.

i seen many different ones from $30 upwards.

for right now i just want a non electric, so that i can play it wherever i want.

I will buy a expensive one, but only after i have learned first.

do you think the one you said "Yamaha Acoustic" will be a good choice for a beginner like me? i also seen it around the same price that you say. but does all of them are same or they have different models etc..?

    thanks for help man.

Yamaha makes a decent, inexpensive guitar. They are just fine to learn on. The tuning pegs are fairly precise and hold the string tension without slipping.

The neck is fairly straight . They do not have nice resonance like a Martin for instance. I had a nylon string model and after a while when your ear is educated nylon will sound like hell.

    so what do you suggest?

so what would be the ideal choice for a beginner. who knows nothing about it.

i don't wanna spend too much. i want it done in cheapest and best way.

coz once i learn i will then spend some bucks on something good. don't wanna waste money on this one which i know i will not use after i am a expert.

but surely for now until i really learn something, i want something good. i hope u getting my point.

    thanks

    If acoustic ...

If you're buying an acoustic guitar, screw brand name altogether, seriously. And DON'T order from a catalog. You want to pick out the exact guitar you want, not necessarily just the model. After playing electric for 2 years I decided to get an acoustic, too, but didn't wanna spend too much. Me and my friend who's played for about 7 years went to various retailers and checked out the guitars ourselves. I ended up taking home a Hohner for $150. It's been 2 years since I bought it and it sounds better than ever. Before even buying it we noticed it even sounded better than some of the $500+ guitars the stores had.

So if you're getting an acoustic, I say go by nothing more than it's quality of sound, not necessarily the brand. A well crafted guitar will sound good, plain and simple.

If your location permits, is there a decent, novice friendly music store near you which offers instructions and instrument rentals? We have two such with top notch instructors who are also connected with the local music camp. By learning first, the sounds will be familiar enough for you to make a choice that fits your needs. If that is not available, I'd recommend the least expensive guitar that you can find at a second hand shop, just for learning purposes. If it sounds terrible even to your untrained ears, don't buy it.
