I just got the $249.99 price for the unactivated phone. This is what the site said:

It appears that it is locked to AT&T. You can try T-Mobile or Verizon, but they may have different network configurations where the phone may not run on their network.

No. Unactivated means that you will need to go to the carrier, AT&T, to get service for the phone. But you can go for one of their month-to-month plans because they didn't subsidize the price of the phone.

As far as unlocking the phone, you may be thinking of jailbreaking. That is when you use software by a third party to jailbreak the device so that you can do things with the phone that Apple never intended for you to do, such as install from a store besides the official Apple App Store.

naturally, i think the phone would be locked to ATT. as far as LTE compatibility goes, it depends on the model number. early ATT iphone 5 doesn't support tmobile LTE freq band 1700 (refer to wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_...ompatibility). Later model after 4/13/2013 support all 4 bands use by ATT and Tmobile. so checking the model number before opening the phone can help with easy return in case it's an early model.

Still, the issue here is 'We're sorry. This item is not available for Store Pickup in your area.' :-/
