Lifetime of Sirius Radio for less than $500

Go On and On and On and On and On

Subscribe for the lifetime of your radio! Yes really, we're not kidding. Pay $499.99 once, forget about bills altogether, and enjoy SIRIUS for a long, long time to come. (Offer ends January 31, 2006.)

And according to Edmunds.com, "The overall win goes to Sirius for its edgier and more surprising content, and its better choices in sports and talk." Also, "...[W]e're going to give Sirius the nod. It strikes us that XM Radio takes fewer chances with its content, sticking to the tried and true, while Sirius takes a riskier path. As a result, the Sirius content is a little edgier and more surprising, plus the company has better choices in sports and talk."

And you cannot forget, you get Howard Stern. ;)

I have Sirius, I could not be happier. After having Sirius, I never want to go back to regular broadcast radio. Regular brodcast radio is not like it used to be, all the channels are owned by a few big name companies. They control what you hear and when you hear it, thats not for me.

I plan on getting Sirius, but I do not think this is a good deal :thumbs_do . $499.99 is only good for the lifetime of the radio which means if it breaks or if you just want to upgrade to a better radio you are out of luck. You can sign up for a two year subscription for $271.95. That means your radio will have to last for almost 4 years to make it pay off.

OK, I just called Sirius to confirm gsterling's post. It is true it is for the lifetime of the radio, that does make it not so good of a deal. I did learn, however, that if the radio is under the one-year warranty and it breaks, they will transfer the service to a new unit at no charge. After the warranty, you can transfer up to three (3) other times (i.e. you upgrade or break your unit) for a fee of $75 each time.

I too have Sirius, but I do have to warn a little bit about the quality of hardware... I had an Audiovox "Plug and play" unit that constantly gave me antenna fits (would say no antenna connected, and I had to wiggle the antenna cord to get it to work). I eventually upgraded my car stereo and bought a Sirius-ready deck, and a tuner to go with it. I've gone through 3 tuners in 3 months (first one just died after a month, and the second would never get good signal). The third one has worked fine, and the warranty has replaced each at no cost (plus shipping), but it's been a huge hassle.

Other than that, I absolutely love the service. I listen to it online at work as well.

I know many people here will defend it, but I seriously don't understand PAYING for radio. I mean, need I say more?

You are paying for regular radio, you just don't realize it. How many time have you heard something on the radio that sounded so good that you had to have it? Sirius music channels are all commercial free, no temptation to buy some stupid crap they advertise constantly or regular radio. I hate listening to regular radio and all the special radio edited songs. There is nothing like hearing a song you like only to find out they edited part of the song out because someone felt it was inappropriate. Plus the DJ's on regular radio are too scripted, on satellite radio anything goes. But this is just my 2 cents, I am sure others will disagree with me.

w00t, sirius looks pretty cool. i've been using xm since that was what came standard in my car. anyone know how the two stack up? i've heard people say the audio quality on sirius is better. Also, i've noticed that xm tries too hard to play songs nobody has heard on fm radio, while at the same time never playing songs we've heard before. It gets kind of annoying.
No sprinkles. For every sprinkle I find, I shall kill you.

Edmunds.com created a pretty good article about it. You can read it here.

this looks like an awesome deal, but i hear that siruis too has starter accepting commercials on some stations.

But the commercial free thing has got me, i am tired of listening to 3mins of music and 10minutes of commercials!!!!!

Sirius' music stations are 100% commercial-free and will always be this way... The news/entertainment/talk radio stations do have commercials (most are nationally syndicated radio). So if you listen to ESPN radio or CNN radio you will get commercials.

I have both Sirius and XM, and prefer Sirius over it's rock channels. That's about all I ever listen. IMO, the Sporster replay and the Clarion Calypso are the better PNP's out there. ;)

Cool Isn't this argument similar to stuff I get from Spoofee?

Choochoojr, I know where you are coming with this... but couldn't that same argument be made in that a lot of the stuff I buy that I find on Spoofee.com would be like my paying for my Internet Connection twice? I mean, while I love all the deals that I get thanks to Spoofee, a lot of the stuff I get--I could do without!!

But yet I buy it anyway because it is either such a great deal or I would have gotten it anyway, eventually.

I listen to my iPod in my car all the time anyway, so this does not apply to me, but my brother and father both have satellite radio and love it... I just don't get it as such a good deal, must just be me. :o
