    COMPLETE system under $700.. POSSIBLE????

going to Iowa (Iowa City) at the end of March and looking for a system for a family member and trying to find something similar to the following:

    Processor atleast 1.0ghz
    256mb DDR Ram
    atleast 30/40GB HD (preferably 7200rpm)
    Windows XP
    CDRW (Speed doesn't matter)
    mouse/keyboard
    Speakers
    Shared Video is ok
    56k Modem

Monitor 17" or larger (no brand preference)
    Color Printer (no brand preference)

This system will be just for surfing, email, and school reports. With a budget of $700, I know this setup will be difficult to find, but with rebates, coupons, etc... i'm sure it can be done. I'd like to purchase these at local stores there, but can only remember them having Best Buy, Staples, Kmart, Walmart, and i THINK Officedepot.. maybe Officemax.

If anyone knows of or can find a way to aquire this system (maybe not the exact setup but similar), please let me know...

I think Best Buy has the 17" VPR Matrix monitor for 199 with a 100 dollar MIR and Kmart has the Compaq 6410 (not sure on model with similar specs for $580)

    Thanks....

you get get better system stats if you build it yourself. or you can get a crappy emachine or compaq or w/e. just go to your local computer store and look at some computers.

That would be VERY easy to do. Even without rebates. I can give you some prices for building it yourself:

    ECS K7S5A PRO USB 2.0 SiSŪ 735 SOCKET A MOTHERBOARD - RETAIL Back Plate Included $59.00 NewEgg.com

AMD Athlon XP 1800+/266 FSB Processor CPU 1800+/ 1.53GHz -0.13 micro Thoroughbred Core Retail $67.00 NewEgg.com

    KINGSTON KVR266X64C25/256 256MB 32x64 PC2100 DDR RAM CL 2.5- OEM $27.00 NewEgg.com

Hard drives you ought to keep an eye out for because there are always deals, but at NewEgg its around $60

    52x burner (CenDyne) $30 AR @ Staples.com

Windows XP will cost alot separately, but you can always go with the illegit way.......

Keyboard and mouse both around $15 off eBay.

You can get cheapo speakers for $20

I can give you my modem if you build yourself....

Monitor will be by far the most expensive; I recommend that you go to your local used computer store and pick one up second hand, you can probably get a used one around $70ish.

Same for a case whcih you forgot to mention..... go to like Compusa and buy the cheapest one they have, probably will be around $110 with a power supply (get above 400 watt).

And last buy not least, a printer..... get a Canon i320 for $30....

TOTAL: $488 if you get XP from me :P

P.S. If you'd be willing to send me $700, I would build it for you and have it for you within around 2 weeks (if you give me a date on when you are going to Iowa City, I can get it for that time).

    Enjoy!

looks like I forgot sound and video card, so I would switch the motherboard to a LEADTEK Motherboard K7NCR18G-PRO Nforce2-GT for AMD Socket A Retail which adds $66 to the final price, making it $554. And by the way, that is without shipping.

I also tried to design a bottom of the line comp at dell, at it comes to almost exactly $700 without a printer (but you can still get that canon separately for $50). And everything is legit from Dell.

Dell Home has the Dimension 2350 for under $700. One config:

    Processor atleast 1.0ghz: Celeron 1800
    256mb DDR Ram: Yep
    atleast 30/40GB HD (preferably 7200rpm): 60 GB 7200
    Windows XP: Home
    CDRW (Speed doesn't matter): 40X
    mouse/keyboard: Yep
    Speakers: Yep
    Shared Video is ok: Yep
    56k Modem: Yep
Monitor 17" or larger (no brand preference): 17"

That's $569 - $50 MIR + ~$110 ship+tax = $629, which gives you around $70 to get a color printer at a local store instead of paying Dell's pricey printer bundle prices. This system ships on 3/19. Cart link: http://ecomm.us.dell.com/dellstore/retrieve_emailed_cart.asp?cart_id=9B8ADA65-0ABF-4C71-8F7E-D485718C4BC8 May expire at any time (the free upgrades may disappear). Can't find any coupons to sweeten the deal, though.

Edit: I put M$ Works on there (which includes Word). If you don't mind WordPerfect you can save $15. You might be able to get the RAM cheaper and add a 256 stick instead of paying $50 for the Dell upgrade. Also their 17" is $100; your local store may have a better price on that too.
