    Less than $180?

Unless you get OEM pricing, I really doubt you could make such a system for <$180. If you still think you can, please share with use commoners how.

P.S. Illegal software and hardware doesn't count!

Hmm a full version of XP is about $150, so you got the rest of it for $30?

Full version of XP Home is 91 dollars (OEM from GoogleGear)

Something tells me that Surfer was just thinking about the hardware though.

It used to be you could buuld your own computer cheaper, but I don't think so today. Plus, you have to figure in your time, etc going to the store & putting it together plus activating XP....Dell computers don't require ever activating Xp no matter what you change, thats nice. Plus they come with expensive software, WORD, Works, etc, that cost far more if you bought them yourself.

Im not quite sure what you mean when you say "Illegal Hardware" because OEM hardware is perfectly legal to use if you are building a computer from the ground up yourself (or buying with a new computer)

As for the software, unless your a 3D gamer there is no reason you couldn't go with OpenSource software (ie: Linux, OpenOffice.org, etc) and not pay a penny for the software ... Legally. And then yes I could see ya building a midrange mostly-integrated system for around $180 (give or take).

five finger, under the table, dl software...watever...the bottom line is it's impossible to built something better than the one listed for 180 or less unless it's ILLEGAL!!
If your left leg is Thanksgiving and your right leg is Christmas, can I meet you in between the holidays?

It's possible, but the software (OS and office) would be technically illegal, yes.

As I stated above ... it is perfectly possiable if your willing to use Linux and OpenOffice.org. This software is all 100% free, and is not illegal.

I'll agree that not many people use it yet, but the newer versions really arent that bad at all, HP/Compaq is starting to ship some of their PCs with Linux/OpenOffice.

I'll admit that right now if your not too computer-savvy then Linux is still sorta in its infantsy when it comes to desktop computers, but its on its way in, and becomming more and more feasiable ... I think you'll start seeing it a lot more as time goes on.

that was a horrible argument. yes it is illegal software. You cant put a computer together for cheaper than that with all of the same specs.
