    computer problem

Have been having a modem problem, wondering if anyone knows what may be wrong. My modem keeps disconnecting me. It may not do it for an hour or more, but sometimes is it every few minutes. Just now it dropped the call after a minute and a half. Don't know if modem is going bad, or if maybe I have some settings wrong. Had to install my internet connection on my own, my CD install disk wouldn't run in my DVD Rom.
Changed computers, the one I am using now is newer and better than what I had, only it was bought used. My old one didn't have this problem though.

Are you using dial-up? Do you have call waiting on your phone?

I do use dial-up and I do have call waiting on my phone. But, it does it even if I disable it to dial up. Is there a simple way to determine if my modem is bad w/out having to take it in to a shop? Don't have a meter.

Well, I figured that would probably have been the culprit.

Have a look at this site and see if it might offer and solutions. Sorry I could not have been more help for you

Thanks, they suggested setting the port speed lower, maybe that will work and I won't have to get a new modem. I am cheap. I will update and let you know if it worked so you won't have to post anymore suggestions if I get it fixed.
By the way, like the Avatar.

when you listen and talk on your phone, do you have fuzz, ANY line noise, or even a radio signal from a radio station? if so, call your telephone company because they are responsible to clean or filter the line, especially if you are moving data (modem) through your telephone line. (if you have a radio station interfering on your telephone line, you have to find out what station it is, call them, and they will send you line filters to you for free, it is their responsibility)

also, you may try testing different phone numbers to get your modem connection, preferably something close to you, because connections to different places very depending on how you are routed and you may have line noise with some phone numbers and not other.

For me it was green copper crud on the phone jack, so I just put in a new phone jack, costs $3. I live by the sea, see? Can also get crud on the phone box outside. To test that, directly connect your modem to it by splicing your wires to the two posts.

My other computer didn't have this problem, just a number of other ones. I am trying different settings to see if I can find out what works and what doesn't. I may have set up my internet connection wrong, my installation disk won't play in my DVD rom, so I had to manually set up. I have been connected for about 10 min. now w/out being cut off so hopefully I may have it worked out. I found out I have a few bad sectors on my hard drive, that may be what is causing some problems too.

    "do you live in hollywood?"

Nope. Have you ever been to the strip?
