yes, it is free to join. the borders reward program is free, but really crappy. you have to spend like 100 or 250 (im cant remember the actually amount, i just remember you'll have to buy A LOT of books) in one month and then you get one day in the next month and you can have like a 20% off whatever you buy on that day.

why is this deal rated hot?

I think it is a mistake to note a Border's deal as hot, when its only 30% off of any "non sale merchandise." In fact, this deal stinks. Their rewards program is terrible (just another card to carry around that does NOTHING for you), and they always have bestsellers and hot items at 30% off. That's no big deal. Now if you could use the coupon on the books that are already 30% off . . .

The coupon that came out last week for Labor Day was really great. It was $10 off on a $20 or more purchase, and it applied to everything, sale books and all. I got a new bestseller for under $10 in hardback.

The rewards is free, no min. to buy. Yes, I do have to carry one extra store card around BUT for the books not on sale the 30% helps out and beats the 10% B & N puts out.

barnes and noble is $25 for their membership and you always get 10%. basically you have to spend 250 at banres to "break even." borders membership, at least for most of us, would be a useless card that has no use except maybe once in a few months when you have to be a member to use the card.

If you're a B&N member we also post coupons addional 10-15% for members & the 10% non member about once a month.
