Is this brand considered decent for external hard drives? Is there anything important to consider when buying an external HD?

    Thanks

Yes, Maxtor is a decent brand. No, there isn't really anything important to consider when buying an external. You just plug it in, and it works.

    Lightbulb things to consider

    1) material of the case; plastic or aluminum. the latter is the choice.
    2) has fan or no fan; noise and 1 more thing to break. latter is the choice (but case better be aluminum to dissipate heat).
    3) size/dimension. they come in various sizes; some very bulky.
    4) for storage purposes, speed of the drive is not an issue; ex, 2mb vs 8 or 16mb cache buffer.

now, about this drive. maxtor, ok, name brand. now consider the above mentioned.

for me though, i'd go with purchasing the drive and enclosure independantly. i get to pick and pair the best for my needs. and at the end, it's much cheaper, etc.

for ex, i just purchased a 300gb seagate yesterday for $80 (including tax/free ship) from outpost.com. it has a $18 rebate on top of it as well (now there's an ongoing debate if that rebate is genuine). a good fanless/aluminum external case will run you around $20-25 shipped. btw, seagates will give you 5 yr warranty vs the 1 yr of maxtor and most other companies.

    hope this helps a bit.

    cheers.
