    Need technical advice yet again

I am trying to order personalized albums and make picture gifts with those online/upload-your-photograph sites. So far I have found Dotphoto, Vistaprint, Whoblinked and Imagestation. I am comparing these sites for prices and items.

But each of these photo sites requires that you download an Active X program. I have just paid big bucks to have my laptop stripped of all the junk I have downloaded that was interfering with my speed, and I was warned to stay away from all Active X programs, b/c they all drop spyware on you, even when they are described as a "trusted site" with a registered name, that was said to be misleading..

What should I do? Download these programs anyway (they all have different ones) and order away? Or just forget about giving the photograph themed Christmas presents?

Thanks so much for your advice. One place I was hoping to use (dotphoto.com) has a bigsavings coupon that expires tomorrow!

It may slow things down when you use that particular site (FYI even with DSL and cable it slows things down), but I don't believe that it will cause any problems when that site and the ActiveX isn't open and being used.

In addition, you should be able to uninstall the program after you use it if you're that concerned or if you notice a difference.

The other option is to go to CVS or Costco etc. to make the picture gifts, but you probably won't come near the on-line deal prices.

My is to download the ActiveX and get the deal before it ends and then uninstall it.

    Good luck!

If the deal is good, and you can safely trust the site, then go ahead and download the ActiveX control. You might want to check with other people who have used the service(s) to see if they had any problems.

If you decide you don't want the ActiveX controls anymore, then follow these simple instructions.
    • Click the Tools menu in Internet Explorer
    • Select the Options menu item
    • Click the Programs tab
    • Click the Manage add-ons button
    • Click the Show drop-down arrow to select Downloaded ActiveX Controls (32-bit)
    • Select the ActiveX control and then click the Delete button
    • Click the OK button
    • Click the OK button

Heidi - I use snapfish.com. I am not much of a tech person either - I dont remember downloading anything to use it ( I could be wrong). But it is so easy uploading pics from a cd or disc or your picture program and the prices are great. They have mugs, calendars, t-shirts and all that stuff too. And they are a member of the BBB. I have used it many times and it's great.

I use Shutterfly a lot. I did download a program to use it but I haven't had any problems. Shutterfly and Snapfish are my favorites.

By the way, if you use Java or Macromedia Flash with Internet Explorer (it is highly unlikely you aren't), you are using an ActiveX control.

This is great! Thanks so much! I really appreciate all the help. I'm going to check out snapfish and shutterfly, but if they don't work out, at least I know how to delete/disable them now. (I didn't realize that I already have Active X on Macromedia Flash, I always thought it was a no-no.)

If there are decent Black Friday deals on computers, I'm going to get myself a machine that actually works. It will be my first computer purchase, so I'm excited. I've always had other people's cast offs, usually three generations or more old, so I can't wait to be the first owner!

Anyway, thanks so much, this was all really helpful.

Heidi, here is a notebook computer at Office Depot that is nice at a good price. I got the same one at Circuit City. It's a Toshiba notebook computer with one of the latest Intel Core Duo 1.6 GHz processors, 512MB of RAM, 80GB hard drive, Windows Media Center operating system, CD and DVD Burner, Wireless, 14.1 inch screen, USB, Firewire, flash memory reader. Price after $150 rebate is $600. CompUSA had it once for $500 after rebate but I don't know if it will be back again.

That is a seriously beautiful machine. Four ports, wowee! I tried to get my 1.0 replaced with a 2.0, because that error message every two minutes is such a pain, but apparently that's not possible, so this one has lots of advantages! Thanks.!
