    what exactly is an up-conversion dvd player? does it simulate hd-dvd?

    Pretty much. It "converts" or enhances it to HD so you can see it at 720p/1080i for much better picture and gets rid of that blurriness and ugly picture since it's not true HD.

    I went to the local store and picked one up. Have a print-out from the Web site and take it to the service counter for a "price match". I guess they ran out of them on the Web site. If you don't have HDMI inputs on your TV then this DVD player will not perform the upconverting (using component, etc.). Also the manual is written in "Chi-English" so don't depend on it for guidance.
