    Rebate - Fake Receipt

Is it illegal to send in a rebate with a fudged date?

I bought a product before the Rebate date, but I want the rebate. Can I just change the receipt to show a different date and send it in?

How much trouble am I looking at?

:hmm: I personally would not fudge it, but I would however, return and re-purchase the item if possible to qualify for the date...

Yeah I am pretty sure that is fraud if you purposely mess with a receipt, they usually have some kind of fine print that says fraudulent claims will not be accepted, they will most likely just throw away your rebate claim if you try that.

I bought it at Buy.com and it is already wrapped for the wife. I guess I will just suck up that $20. Dang!

    Thanks for the info though!

Tampering with the paperwork for the rebate info that you send in is considered mail fraud. More than likely they will just deny your rebate but the rebate form probably has some mail fraud statement on it. Yeah, I'd just eat the $20 and not even worry with it unless you can find free shipping and get the original one sent back for free.

I did that one time. Bought product and actually opened it. Few days later saw there was a really good $40 rebate. (Rats!) Ordered another one real quick (free shipping) and used the original box UPC for the rebate (made sure they were the same) and sent back the second product (unopened) on the first receipt. It was a slight hassle but it was worth the $40 rebate.
