    Not a Deal

If the experience with Book 6 (Half Blood Prince) is any guide, the pre-order is a gamble you are likely to lose.

When 6 came out, there were no shortages at retail outlets, negating any benefit of pre-ordering, and the pricing was as good or better if you just went into a store and bought. I got mine at A&P for something like 50% off cover price, and didn't have to pay shipping.

I'll pass on this deal, expecting a repeat situation.

I ordered mine (regular edition) from Amazon and they have a guarantee that if the price drops during the pre-order time I will get the lower price. Plus after I added a few $1.90 scarves for gifts, shipping was free.

Go to your local library and borrow it. J.K. Rowling has plenty enough money already.

    coupon

The new Harry Potter book comes out in july (it expires in 2-07), so how do you use the coupon, I preordered the book at Barnes and noble and they just took my name and info down I didn't have to pay.
    Thanks ahead of time

I'm with you, squiddy. The only issue is the wait. For Half-Blood Prince, there was a family at the A&P just behind me in line who were buying THREE COPIES so none of their kids would have to wait for the other to finish.

But maybe Spoofee should post that as a deal -- get the latest DVD releases and hot books at your local library.

hmm i prefer to pre order from the amazon.com/uk site to get the original version as a pose to the slightly modified us version. I think preorders are worth it then, and i havent had any bad experiences with amazon.com / uk.

Just so you are aware, the 20% off coupon at Borders expires on 2/9/07 and says
"May not be combined with other coupons, sale pricing.."

$20.99 is sale pricing imho, since the regular price on the book is $35.00. Even if they did allow you to use a coupon on a sale priced item, since the coupon is only good until 2/9, you would only be able to use the discount if Borders allows you to pre-pay for the book.

The only reason I got it off amazon last time was because they guaranteed it would be at my house on release day, letting me be lazy and waiting at home for it to come. =D

My sisters tried doing this with the last Harry Potter book and they ended up having to wait an entire month because the wait list was so long (as in, 150th in line), even though the library system had about 50 copies.

Amazon's pre-order thing is pretty unreliable too. I preordered World of Warcraft's Burning Crusade and ended up waiting over a week to get it. Buying from the bookstore is definitely the best bet.

Got mine at Wal-Mart. No Borders near by. Amazon was too pricey. What's up with the "deluxe" edition for $65?!? What's the difference?

I would imagine it would parallel the deluxe edition of the last HP book.
Here is the description for that one:

"This Deluxe Edition will include a 32-page insert on special paper at the end of the book featuring near scale reproductions of Mary GrandPré's interior art, as well as a never-before-seen piece of full-color-art for the frontispiece. The book, which comes in a foil-stamped cardboard slipcase printed with the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince cover image, will also include a blind-stamped cloth case, full-color endpapers printed with the jacket art from the regular edition, luxurious foil, and a wraparound jacket featuring exclusive, suitable-for-framing art from Mary GrandPré."
