the build sounds like a recipe for lag and disaster
i dont think the celeron and 512 mb memory will be enough to handle vista effectively.
    any ideas / opinions?

Should work ok / so-so given the lack of features and eye candies of vista basic... but still, i wouldn't recommend this laptop...

I would like to mention that while Toshiba may be a fine name in computers (or not) the keyboard sucks. Some of the keys are in weird places. Like for instance the 'windows' key.. Its at the top right of the keyboard. Itll take some retraining yourself to get used to the new keyboard layout.

A petty thing, but it turned me off to Toshiba.

I bought one of these at Office Depot last week. I'm taking it back tomorrow. It's so slow, and Vista is sooo annoying, I can't bear to use it. Pluse Toshiba tech support is about as useful as asking a pre-school class for advice.

    Stay away.

Sad to hear what you have to go through with the laptop... Could you share with us what makes Vista so annoying? I'm interested in finding out more about the Vista OS.

    Thanks a bunch~!

I'm curious as well. All I heard is it wastes a bit more battery than XP cause it's so flashy.

IMO, Windows Vista home basic is garbage. How can anyone use a stripped down version of an OS? You're better of getting Home Premium, not Basic. I use Vista Business, sure it doesn't have the media center capabilities, but so what? XP Pro didn't come with it anyway.

Vista is a nice OS, but it takes a bit getting used to. If you want the full effects and graphics of the OS, get at least 1 gig of ram and a decent video card with dedicated memory.

Here's a link of a comparison between all of them:

Laptops like these are basically useless now. Stores advertise these laptops/desktops, knowing that they're pieces of junk and limiting stock to 1 or 2 per store, in order to lure customers into the store.

Used vista ultimate for like 2 weeks, its pretty but it still has some issues. Some software incompatibility (nero), wmp wont let winamp be the default player (maybe a new ver of winamp is needed). I agree about the laptop, im running a p4 at 3ghz with 1.5gb of ram with a radeon 9800pro and vista was pretty laggy, i was running ultimate and this is home basic tho... When I build a new system ill switch to vista, till then xp is great .
