about:blank popup - Help Me Geeks!

    Ok so here's the deal:
Today something happened to my computer, I think it was when I had a friend's USB drive plugged in and transferred a zip file. I stupidly didn't check it for viruses, I know I know...
Anyhow, now when I open a regular folder (ex: My Documents), as soon as I close the folder, a blank webpage (about:blank) opens up. There's nothing in the 'view source' except for a couple HTML tags, and it doesn't send me anywhere, just a regular blank page.
When I ran AdAware, it found and cleaned an IEHijack, but the stupid about:blank page is still popping up. This thing is not taking over my actual internet settings, like my homepage, and it doesn't pop up with a blank page when I close IE, just when I close regular folders. Does anyone have advice on how to fix this? I've searched the internet and all I can find is the fix for the homepage hijack, which this isn't...
    Help! :verysad:

If you are using Windows XP (or Windows ME 'ugh'), try a system restore.
    1. Click the Start button
    2. Point to All Programs
    3. Point to Accessories
    4. Point to System Tools
    5. Click on System Restore
    6. Click the Next button to 'Restore [your] computer to an earlier time'
    7. Choose a date, such as yesterday, and then click the Next button

Follow the prompts. Make sure you have everything saved before you do it, because it will restart your computer. You won't lose any data, such as Word documents or the like.

If that doesn't work, or you have another Windows operating system, let me know.

    spaz's restore procedure should work.

    if not,

    1. did you check in the control panel, add and remove software, and see if any unusual programs have been added

    2. check in IE within Tools, Manage Add Ons, and see if there are unusual add ons in that list

    3. is your friend an avid user of bitorrent or kazaa?

Thanks guys, it seems to have worked. I don't know if she uses kazaa/bittorrent, but she's in college so it's likely. Anyhow, no more USB swapping without protection for me. They should make some portable USB virus scan software called the USB Condom...

    You had a browser hijacker.

That is the classic symptom of the one of the variants of the notorious CoolWebSearch hijacker. This variant hijacks the homepage to 'about:blank'

At one time this was one of the most difficult hijackers to remove, but due to the large number of cases there is now lots of support out on the 'net.

Probably the easiest to use is The CoolWebSearchShredder Removal Tool

You can also get it here

You might like to try using BHO Demon to see what other browser helper objects may be running on your box.

I suspect that this object is still on your machine, in the restore area. You may have to delete all the restore point history.

Are you able to search normally or is there funny behavior when you enter a search? Are you directed to the same peculiar search site? Any porn showing up?

Thanks, I think the system restore fixed everything, the CWS tool didn't find anything, and my computer has been running normal since the restore, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.
