Article: In the heat wave, the case against air conditioning

The article above was a very warming article on the good that could come if America relied less on air conditioning. I have to admit I love AC. I cool my apartment to a chili 67 degrees at night. For a while it was 64 degress, but I increased it to 67 to try to cut back.

Do you guys cut back on AC use in order to save money? Anyone know the optimal temperature for saving money in the summer? :greed:

We just switched to a swamp cooler from our central air. It has saved us some money there. I believe the optimal temperature is somewhere around 75-78 degrees from what I can recall reading from our gas company.

We don't have central air, we have a/c in each room. We only put them on when we are having guests, or when it becomes very uncomfortable.

I want to get a whole house fan.......I have heard some good things about them. :yesnod:

Wow, none of yall must live in S. Texas. If you don't have AC down here you'll turn into a baked potato. Our summer temps run between 93 and 100+ with humidity levels at 60%+ and at night if we hit the upper 70's then it's cool out, but the humidity can climb into the 80% range. Our AC sets on 79 during the day and 78 at night.

I lived outside of Houston for a while. It was really hot. I'm in North Texas now.

Try South Florida. Humidity in the 85-95% range and temps in the high 90s. I work outside a lot, and in attics occasionally. I can handle the heat, but you'll take the AC out of my house over my dead, well refrigerated body

So Dan, you must have a nice tan....

but oy! you can keep the sweat!:ack:

I used to live in the he// pit of Georgia....Macon. For the first month there, I felt like I hit a wall when I walked outside. It literally took my breath away. Never again!

farmer's tan, lower arms , face and neck. But I didn't pay the RACIST 10% tanning salon tax for it.

I thought we had no tax increases for the middle class? What is this?

Don't you know?
Part of "Free Health Care", went into effect July 1, a 10% federal tax on tanning salons.
No corresponding 10% tax on Afro-Sheen hair products, gold dental veneers, or MD20/20.

If anyone takes this as a 'racist' post, please grow a sense of humor.

Don't get one.

You'll either suck all your furniture into the attic OR blow everything out the windows when you turn it on.

:yesnod: You all know where I going with this.

:hmmmm: Suck or blow?....... Please don't make me get on my back on the kitchen floor again and tell you which way the blades are turning......:lost:

This statement can be interpreted myriad ways.

OMG! My husband will freak if he reads where you're keeping yours at! I put mine at 74-75 during the day, but at night I turn it to 71-72. I like lot's of covers.
