GoogleGear has the AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 1.533GHz Processor (Retail box, item 80157-R) for $60 with free shipping. Includes stock heat sink, fan, and 3-year warranty
That's a very good price for a retail box version. But, many XP1800+ CPUs are Palominos which don't overclock well. The 1700+ may be a better value because of its ability to overclock.
How difficult would it be for someone to install this? I have an AMD Athlon 850 in my HP and would consider doing this myself, but I don't want to trash the machine. I've pulled chips before but wouldn't want to do any soldering.
I am not sure they are both Socket A chips. You need to confirm that first.
Go to AMD's website and they have a guide on building desktop PCs and it is filled with handy information on what to do and not to do. That should be a first step. It is a .pdf file.
Let me know if you cannot find it and I will search. Go to www.amd.com and then select Products and then the Athlon XP and then go to the lower right and select white papers and tech guides or something like that. It will pull up a list of pdf files and you want the first one.
jdurbin - I downloaded and printed the document and stripped down my computer to see its processor. It appears to be the same type in the document. So, I ordered the processor and if I receive it by Saturday, will install it this weekend. Thanks for your assistance. I love Spoofee!
