Can someone explain to me how one of these works? I've seen these on here all the time, and I would think that it offers a cheaper option than buying a pre-made external drive... but can I just buy this and an internal drive and I'm set?

Please help!

i've never had one before. if i understood correctly, you may think this unit as an adapter for internal hard drive. you can plug in to pc via USB whenever you need to rather than install on your pc. If you have extra internal hard drives, you can use them as storage devices.
 
Actually, externals are equally cheap these days. Unless you have some extra internal drives. . .
