Bestbuy - Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 /w GPS for $49.99

That's a great price. I have been using Streets & Trips for years and I would recommend it.

Bestbuy.com has the Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 with GPS Locator - Windows for a good price.

I already have and use S&T and have the GPS, but its like the 2006 version. I wonder if this is actually less expensive than an upgrade to the new maps?

CAUTION: The 2008 version REQUIRES activation and there have been many reported bugs of activation not working well on some laptops. Also, the activation prevents you from having a working copy on your home PC... not good.

It's still a good price with the GPS antenna, but the more portable TomTom can be had for just over a hundred bucks now, and be much more useful/practical/portable on a vacation without the need for a large laptop and a needed bulky inverter to power it for 12 hours a day of driving.
Also, the smaller GPS navigators are portable enough to use while hiking to avoid getting lost in the backwoods. Larger laptops are pretty hard to lug around while hiking...

You have been warned!

Some people use just the software to plan a trip, print it out and use only that. It's very good for planning a trip ahead of time and finding places to visit along the way, etc. But now that Microsoft is using activation you can only install it to one PC and that would be your laptop. I agree about getting a portable GPS like a Tom Tom. They are so useful because they are small and portable. But a laptop running S & T or Street Atlas has the advantage of seeing a larger overall picture of where you are as well as being able to switch between a street map or terrain map. I have found a few nice off the road fishing spots using a laptop with S & T. ;)

I would rather spend my money on a real GPS, the price is going down and there are more choices now. When sitting at home to plan your trip, why not just use google maps? They even have a street view for some major cities ...
