This label maker uses type TZ tape, and it comes with a VERY short starter roll.
You can get a 4-pack of (full length) replacement tape at Costco for just under $40.
 
It also takes 6 batteries to run, that will add some extra weight to your hand held
 
Forty bucks for tape? Six batteries?

I'd rather use a Sharpie and call it a day...

indeed. tape ain't cheap. but still, I'm glad I've got mine, and use it for many purposes when my handwriting just won't be good enough.
 
It's nice to have an electric labeler you can plug in. But if it requires batteries and doesn't come with a full roll of tape, it's not worth it. I'm sticking with Sharpie. :)
