What do you do when you have a dispute with a mechanic?
I had my transmission rebuilt in my Plymouth Voyager 2 week ago and it has been driving really rough since I got it back. When I'm in the lower gears it kinda jerks especially when I'm coming to a stop. My husband took it back to the mechanic and he looked at it and said it might be the computer and it's not the transmission. They can test it which is another $400. I have a one year warranty on the transmission but he's saying there's nothing wrong with it. I feel like we're getting screwed!

Everyone always says contact the BBB, but I dont think that ever works. Did you try another mechanic?

Not yet. If I take it to another mechanic, I wonder if they are going to charge me to look at it.

Near us we have Pep Boys (I think it's Pep Boys) who will hook up to your car's computer and do a diagnosis for free. (I have heard it's not a terrific diagnosis, but if it's something very obvious they might pick it up)

Either that or just go to a dealership and bite the bullet....Good luck!

any transmission that is electronically shifted can be diagnosed with
electronics, no need for a hefty $400 inspection charge.

typically it should be under $50.

What computer? You can buy a OBD II (What year car?) to read the codes for like $59 at Kragen. It's real easy. Some stores might read it for you for free.

You can also borrow one for free from Autozone, you just have to put down a deposit which is refunded upon return. The deposit is a hundred bucks or so.

It's a '93 Plymouth Voyager minivan. When I picked it up he said he had talked to the Chrysler Dealership and there's a part I can replace for about $130 from the dealership that will stop it from shifting like that. I think I'm just going to call the dealership.

If you can send your husband you have a better chance.....it's just the way it is....

thats why i never gone to a shop.. i just let my bro to do all the work

First hand experience.

Okay this is from experience I received when my husband ran a truck repair shop.

Okay if you have had to take this vehicle to another mechanic to have corrections made, from faulty repair, misdiagnosis, etc. etc.. You have the right to be reimbursed by the first repair shop for the services they performed and sometimes even the latest repair for the same issue.

This will require a trip to small claims court but if that is your hard earned money being scammed from you, you don't want it wasted, you want it back.
If you are able to find a repair shop that can properly handle the repair, have them or a representative join you in your appearance at the court. That helps alot. Its not exactly neccessary as a statemet of repairs, parts , etc will most times do.

Do your homework, document everything and if you feel your jerked around, jerk back. This may be a common problem for that make and model, I don't know but you could find that information on the internet and proceed from there.

It also wouldn't hurt to find information on the repair shop you took this too. All licenses, certifications from trainings and all are to be in full view for the customers to view. Who knows maybe you did not get a fully qualified mechanic on that job.

Thanks I think I'm ( I mean my husband ) is going to get a second opinion. Precocious is right. Men do have better luck with mechanics. Vehicles are my absolute least favorite thing to deal with.

LOL, I guess its safe to assume precocious has a man who is not afraid of yard work. Allergies keep mine from tending to the lawn but since I chased a snake into the pond with the riding mower, my mechanic husband will no longer work on it so I use the horses for lawn mowers. LOL.
