Can a laptop battery be so dead and worn out that it wont keep charge even if it is plugged into an outlet?
Your advice before I go and spend hundred's of dollars to fix this thing.......

The story started when the cord to the laptop was bent and caused it to short out. The cord I bought wasnt the right one and we are now on cord #3. Now I know that the battery is bad - the last time it held a charge without power supply was only for about 3 or 4 minutes. We also thought that the prongs on the inside of where you plug the cord in, might have been bent. But I am betting the prob is the battery.....

I doubt it is the battery. You should be able to use the laptop when it is plugged in. You can even take the battery out of a laptop entirely and use it while its plugged in.

If you want to try it anyway, you can usually find a replacement battery pretty cheap on ebay.

I'm guessing your super powers do not extend to small electronic devices.

Based on the age of your laptop and (er go) the age of your battery - it is very possible that your battery is :rip: .

If your laptop works without the battery (using the cord) - there is nothing to repair.

If your laptop is not working (at all even with the cord) , well then you got problems.

What kind of cord (laptop) do you have that you can bend the prongs???

You are right - superpowers end at small electronics!

When I say "prongs" I mean the inside of the hole that the cord goes in. There is some type of metal in there that obviously holds the cord in and creates some kind of current - right?

All I know is that, we have to use the cord all the time, and then it will blink because the "battery is going dead." To get it started up again sometimes we take the battery out for a few minutes. Then we wait for the pink light (battery charging light) to stay on for a little while before we turn it on.
I hope it is nothing more serious than the battery. The computer is almost 2 years old and used every single day for work and fun.

I have seen some on ebay - because a brand spanking new one is expensive!!!!!!
Thanks for your help!

ok here is one for ya

the computer works with the battery in it, but does not work with the battery out...

:questionmark:

Yes, that is how the circuit works on some laptops, which is a pretty silly design.
Which one do you have?

Did you clean the battery contacts?

Really? So a new battery could fix this thing? It is a gateway laptop.
I have not cleaned the contacts, but to get it to come up again - I take the battery out for a few minutes and it usually comes back on...usually.....

So does the laptop turn on even for a few seconds? If it does and then turns off assume it's the battery. Here's what I'd do. Take it to Bestbuy or circuit city and ask them if the battery is dead. Tell them you'll order one from them if that's the case. Usually they'll tell you for free what the problem is if you intend on buying something. This has worked for me in the past and it eliminates guessing games. Good Luck!

E-bay - new battery (read cheap). I had the same scenario with old laptop of mine at the beginning of the year. New battery fixed it.

The little round hole that the cord goes into has a jack inside and can become dislodged very easily. This happened to mine and the repairman says its very common.
My motherboard burnt up coz I didn't keep it on a cooling pad.:verysad:

Thank you all so much - it sounds like it is the battery then. I was worried about burning up the motherboard because most of the time is flashes constantly.

Anybody got a $100 I can borrow? :05:

Thanks again! :bigok:
