UPDATE: $13.76 from settlement if you purchased music

Claim Filing Period: The deadline to file a Claim Form was March 3, 2003

Not sure if this is legit or not... I stopped when it asked me for the last 4 numbers of my SSN, but if this is legit, you could be entitled to $5-$20 and a free CD: http://www.musiccdsettlement.com/english/default.htm

Anyone hear of this before now?

Edit: this looks legit, if you can believe the North Dakota Attorney General.

Also remember that the link will not always work, due to EXTREMELY high demands for the site you would need to try like 5 times to get the page to load... or go back at another time.

Maybe it's just me, but I got right in when I tried.

im pretty sure it's legit...they have radio commercials and mailings plus my friend said he saw it on some judicial .gov site so feel free guys...

result in awards of less than $5, the Settlement Fund will revert to Cy Pres distribution. Cy Pres distribution means all Settlement Funds would be distributed to not-for-profit corporations and/or charitable organizations and/or governmental or public entities within your state, to be used for music-related purposes or programs. For more information on this, please see the Notice of Proposed Settlement.

Above was taken right from the site. Sounds more like a scam to me. I am sure quite a few people will be doing this, so you will probably get nothing as the paragraph states. They might just send you more garbage mail and such though!

No scam

It's no scam ... heard about it on the radio, TV, and paper. Just probably not gonna actually get any money out of it b/c there will be so many claims that it'll all go to non-profit organizations. Still though, **** the record labels.

Free money from settlement if you purchased music

If you purchased any music CD from a retail store between 1995 and 2000, you are eligible to receive a small piece of a settlement. You can receive between $5 and $20 back from the music industry. You will have to fill out a claim that you purchased a music CD or record from a retail store between 1995 and 2000, and you will be entitled to get $5 to $20. Information online, or call 1-877-347-4782, or TDD/TYY 1-888-314-5051. People who are concerned about privacy may not want to take the risk just for the possibility of getting $5 to $20. As always, take the plunge at your own risk. But from what I can tell for now, this does appear to be legit. Another note, if enough people sign up so that the amount each person is entitled to is less than $5, then all money will go to non-profit organizations, government agencies, and other agencies involved with "music-related purposes" and no individuals will receive any money

Heard about this in new jersey seems good to me

The math:
If the total claims go over 13.5 Million, there will be no payout.
If the claims stay below 3.4 Million, payouts would be $20.

Pssst! Don't tell anybody else!;)

Update: my numbers are high -- here's the para. from Snopes:

If few people apply (as of the end of December 2002 only 30,000 had signed up), everyone receives the maximum payment of $20. As more people apply the individual share lessens; if more than 8.8 million people eventually sign up, the individual share drops below $5 and consumers don't get anything. (The cost of mailing out over 8.8 million checks was deemed too expensive, so if the number of applicants reaches that total the settlement money will be donated to public entities and nonprofit organizations rather than distributed directly to consumers.)

So, claim your money while you can. And hope nobody else is paying attention.

This is posted everywhere, on every deals fourm and board. It is even being advertised on the radio. So you can be assured that everyone is paying attention. And the non-profit organizations will make out and not us

WOOT!

Update - March 6, 2003
To receive any reimbursement under these settlements, you must have mailed or filed a claim on-line with the Settlement Administrator. The Court approved deadline for submitting a claim for reimbursement under the settlements has now passed.
For consumers that have submitted valid claim forms by mail or filed valid claims online, it appears that a cash reimbursement will be available if the Court approves the settlements. We are currently processing and validating the claims received. Until this process is completed, we are unable to determine the individual reimbursement amount. If you are eligible, the amount of your refund will depend upon what the Court approves and the number of valid claims filed. No reimbursement may occur until approved by the Court. The Final Approval Hearing is scheduled for May 22, 2003 with an appeal period to follow. If the Court approves the settlements along with the payment of claims, and there are no appeals, it is anticipated that reimbursement checks will be mailed in mid-summer 2003.
This Web site will be updated as new information becomes available.
Free Cash is good.

Here goes nothing........ I've wasted more time chasing $5 before.

Besides, I'm doing this because it's moraly wrong for the record companies to do what they have been doing.......because I want to stand up and be counted, becuase ...

... I might get money. :D

Free CD??? I know the Money part is lagit, but never herd anything about the free CD. Is this really part of the settlement?

:?:

This is the real deal

They are taking forever for the payout on the settlement, but this is the real deal. I did research on it and had a local tv station research and verify legitimacy.

North Dakota AG's office reports that the settlement amount is $13.76, and that he checks should be going out any day now.
