Why is that a deal?

I just bought a Maxtor 500GB SATA drive at Fry's for $99, pretty sure it's 7200RPM also.
Someone please explain.

type of drive

It's a laptop hard drive. Decent price for that.

Hmm, that makes a world of difference. Spoofee, you may wish to update the front page and note that this is a laptop drive for the Latitude series.

Was thinking the same thing !!!!

If this is the Seagate Momentus 7200.2, most places have it for $160-$175 plus shipping. Even if Dell charges sales tax it's still a good deal.

Dell is so specific about this working with a Latitude D820, I wonder does that mean there's some about it which will not work with other notebooks.

Aren't notebook harddrives standardized?

I'm thinking this may be even hotter as this drive should work in the PS3 as well. It may be wishful thinking on my part.

It will work with anything that takes a 2.5 SATA drive. Pretty sure there is nothing different about Dell's/Seagate drives that would make them incompatible.

Not sure if this is included, but quite a few of Dell's hardware components are proprietary. Extra income for Dell since you only have a single choice.

Generally speaking Dell model computers usually have compatible components between series. That is, if you have a Latitude of one series (600, say) and one of another series (an 850) the hardware should be the same. But, YMMV.

good deal

This is a good deal.. #1 this is a 2.5" notebook drive, not a desktop drive.. and 7200 drives for notebooks are the fastest available.. Where as for desktops you can get 10,000rpm drives.. Most notebook drives are 5400rpm as a standard now, some though are still only 4200rpm.. This drive is also very hard to find, yet alone in stock.. Newegg doesn't even have it listed yet.. Computer Giants have it for $160.. This is the fastest notebook drive currently available, period.

However, i would recommend the Western Digital 250gb 5400rpm Scorpio drive for $180, because of the larger density platters it performs just as fast as the 7200rpm 160gb seagate, actually a hair under is the second best performing drive out there.. So for the money, I'd go for the 250gb since they are about the same price and same performance but larger size.. Seagates are nice because they offer a 5yr warranty, currently the only drive company to do so.. (except for Western Digital that offers it on their 10,000rpm drives and their 'RE' raid series). The 7200rpm drives do offer superior access time, but the 7200.2 160gb Seagate and the 250gb 5400rpm WD drive have nearly identical average read/write times..

Also, if your looking for one for your ps3, definitely don't get a 7200rpm, it really won't help the load time.. Go for the 250gb instead.. Also tons of reports and forum posts that the 250gb works in ps3's no problem..

Lastly, $130 is a good price for the Seagate 7200.2 160gb drive, if you want the fastest drive out there for your notebook this is it..
