Dumpster Diving - Do you do it?

its fun, and i usually find good stuff

just remember to be quick, cops are suspicious

My neighbors/friends moved out about 6 months ago, these people are wasteful as hell. They left all these trash bags of stuff out one night, they weren't even living there. Around 6PM, duskish, my friend and I went over there and went nuts. I found a Sharp Hi-8 camcorder in brand new shape, telephones, as well as school supplies, other electronics, CD-Rs, floppy disks, the works. I was pretty happy with myself.

I've done it. Gotten a couple of vacuums during Christmas because people sucked up their pine needles and then threw the vacuum awaw because it clogged. We also have a nice crystal pitcher which we use as well.

Yup I've done it,

Gotten a old computer case which wasn't good for much, but I found about a $1.00 in change in it. lol Also got a small printer riser which I still use. I also got a tiny Aloe vera plant about 4 years ago. This thing is now huge and I have transplanted it several times to other pots and they thing keeps growing. I dont think it can be killed.

I just found this article from the Houston Chronicle. I though it was interesting. A professor took a year off of school and did some dumpster diving.

The former governor of my state is a local legend for accidentally tossing out a $10,000 bribe and then literally jumping in the dumpster to get it back.

Use to work for a company that went through many computers, parts, and monitors. We, as a group, use to "dumpster dive" through the boxes marked as scrap. After scoring a few optical mice, I struck the motherload with a 17" LCD monitor that works like a champ. This was shortly after 17" LCD monitors were first released. I still use it today. I miss the dumpster diving, it made up for the lack of pay.
I think I still have a shoebox full of memory, hard drives and processors from that job too. Nothing great, but who knows when you might need 8mb of ram or a 3 GB hard drive or a 233mhz processor or a token ring card.

once a year my city has a trash pickup day when you can throw away ANYTHING of any size. so my friends and i ALWAYS go out looking for loot :D (as do many other people)

we stay out till 5am the lat 2 weekends. we find computers and rip them apatr for all tehg opod stuff (i got a 20 gig hard drive). I also found a satelite reciever whichs ells on ebay for 150ish :D

I got a hot tip of when Blockbuster was going to dump 75% of their VHS inventory a couple years ago, ended up with 2 truckloads of movies they'd just tossed in the dumpster. Made about $500 selling them in lots of 200 on ebay

good times LOL
