No, seriously, Starbucks will close from 4-7 et for training purposes (so they can learn how to make a decent cup of coffee). A lot of the local coffee shops around Charlotte are offering 1/2 off their drinks too. Here in the Carolinas DD is giving SB a run for their money (due to all the northern transplants). First, DD put a hurt on the NC native Krispy Kreme donut shops, but now 83% of their business is coffee, so they are hurting SB's. Last year SB's sales decined for the first time ever. DD coffee is all roasted near me at the mammoth S&D Coffee too (they also supply McDonald's, Burger King, Denny's, etc with coffee). DD is a LOT different than they used to be. No more "in-store" made donuts or those little dining counters like they used to have. At least not around here.

Remember when Krispy Kreme got overextended? Yankee rival Dunkin' Donuts last week announced 14 new locations for Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro -- six to open this year.
The move is "part of an aggressive national growth strategy." Additional opportunities for new franchisees also exist in Charlotte, the company says. Dunkin' Donuts sells 2.7 million cups of coffee a day -- perhaps something to keep in mind Tuesday.
Is Starbucks' national shutdown on Tuesday frightening those of you who haven't blinked in years? If you haven't heard, the national coffee IV is about to get yanked from our veins as the giant coffee grinder closes most of its outlets for three hours Tuesday night from about 5:30-8:30 for training.
"I'm glad they're addressing how far astray their baristas have gone," says Don Keen, founder of Dilworth Coffee. He'll offer discounts at the original Dilworth Coffee on East Boulevard on Tuesday. Other independent coffee places will do the same.
