www.doom9.org has multitudes of freeware for all your DVD needs.

I suggest clicking "GUIDE" then "Divx / Xvid" then "Divx5". From there, you will be provided links to two downloads that will provide you with all the software you need to turn your DVD movies into 1-CD Divx or Xvid dupes, as well as a spiffy guide for basic configuration to get your first successful transcoded rip.

GordianKnot will be you free software package for doing such a task, and it works wonderfully! Be sure to read the guide. If you have problems, search the forum for answers. There are also tools for DVD-to-DVD copying, 2DVD-to-1DVD shrink-copying, DVD2SVCD, and all kinds of goodies. Though some of these methods require the use of shareware or purchase of software. But the Gordian Knot setup is 100% free, and fan-freagin'-tastic.

Not exactly a new or freebie deal, but it's always something good to have!

I'm fairly familiar with this, and it's good to start the newbies with DivX and XViD but I think that in the end, I like to rip mine in SVCD. But anyway, I won't rant on, good way to get everyone started with this.

I tried DVDXCopy at a friend's place and I didn't really like it. It didn't allow me to choose the options and features that I wanted to. I like to do everything manually to make sure that my rips are exactly what I want them to be, not what some default settings provide.
