This isn't exactly a deal breaker, but when I was looking for a hosting service I found SphereWebHosting, which has a number of plans. The benefit of them is that they charge you monthly, instead of all up front, meaning you are stuck with whatever for however long, regardless if their service begins to suck.

Hosting starts at $4.99 a month. No strings attached. I really like that.

FYI, the $1.99 deal is only for domans purchased with a non-domain product as well (Hosting, Email, etc). Without a non-domain product, the cost is $9.99/yr for a .com.

Requires Additional Purchase

GoDaddy.com is offering a year registration for a .com domain name for $1.99.
However, GoDaddy requires an additional non-domain purchase (i.e. hosting plan) so it's not a particularly wonderful bargain. I passed on it.

domain ALONE still 1.99

it looks like you have to buy an additional hosting plan or something to get the 1.99 .com registration, but you dont. just continue on to check out and enter "199test" as a promotion code, and viola!

I concur, it does work, but the discount is only valid on the 1st year of the domain. If you try to extend the term longer than 1 year at the time of registration, it comes up at their full price.

If you're going to do multi-years (and actually that's what I like about godaddy, they pay ICANN in advance, so your records are indicative of what you've paid for vs. 1and1.com and others, which even if you pay 10 years in advance, they only pay 1 year at a time).

Yahoo had a great deal awhile back, but I haven't seen any good deals (e.g. sub ~$6 of so) on multi-year deals.
