Polar is a pretty reputable brand. I have one. They sell them at our sports club too.

I don't know much about Pro-form.

However, if you aren't sure you are really going to use one, starting off with a $30 investment might be a better choice.
 
Polar is definitely good. Everything's made in China anyway:)
