I Just bought an external hardrive :) 2.5" from newegg.com. toshiba 80 gb 16mb cache with the case from mwave.com. The case is a galaxy enclosure. I am having problems installing the hardrive. :( My computer wont' read it as an external hardrive. I installed the drivers but it doesn't seem to do much at all. :(

Does anyone know how to get this started? how do i format my hardrive so i can being to use it? Isn't it suppose to work like a usb thumb drive?

Thanks

What version of Windows are you using? I know that windows XP Pro should recognize most usb hard drives right out of the box. If you are using Windows 98 / ME you will need to install the drivers that came with it, and might have to access it via whatever software it came with.

Stupid question, but it has to be asked. Did you turn on the hard drive? I know a lot of usb hard drives have a power cord and a power switch. Just checking :).

Your computer will show the External HDD as an actual HDD, and not a Device that is removable, it will show this if you are using Win XP

Yeah but it only shows up if you prep it with Partition magic or you can use the computer HD management function of XP.

You can't format it until you fdisk it which is what these computers programs do. I put in such a drive myself.

There is an option inside xp that will let you format it. otherwise it won't show until it is done.

2.5 inch hard drives act the same as desktop hard drives when preparing them for use.

Go to Start ->Run

Type:
compmgmt.msc
press enter

Click on disk management. Your new hdd should come up with with a long black bar and should say unallocated space.

Right click whichever disk # it is. Initialize the disk.
Now right click the black bar with the label unallocated space and select new partition

follow the wizard and your done.
