This story really upsets me because I have a fifth grader!!..I can't believe that the teacher left the students alone like this for a school assembly everyone should have been attending!!

Spearsville, LA) - Union Parish Sheriff's Deputies have arrested three students in connection with accusations of kids having sex in a classroom.

The accusation was made by a teacher at Spearsville Elementary School. Now, an 11-year-old girl, a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy have been arrested.

Sheriff Bob Buckley says the children performed sex acts with one another - and they did it in front of at least 20 other fifth graders.

An investigation found there was no teacher in the classroom when all this happened. The students' teacher was in a school assembly which didn't require the presence of the fifth graders.

Sheriff Buckley says a fifth grade witness told a high school student about the incident the next day, and it was the older student who informed a teacher.

At least one more arrest is expected. An 11-year-old boy is accused of being a lookout and will be booked as an accessory.

The accused children will go before a juvenile court judge.

what?? where I teach we're not allowed to leave the kids unsupervised at all. If we need to step out of the room for anything (even if just for a minute) we need to get someone to cover for us.

If the 5th graders didn't have to be at the assembly, why was the teacher at the assembly? Shouldn't he/she have been in classroom with them teaching them something?
I think the teacher should be on trial as well for...something. neglect? child endangerment? I don't know, I'm not a lawyer. But it doesn't seem right that the kids are the only ones in trouble.

I heard about this this morning! This is outrageous! I agree....the teacher or some school offical should be held accountable as well.

In sixth grade a female student and I were left alone for two hours while the other students and teacher went to a orchestral concert at the middle school. I didn't want to go to the concert and got parental permission to stay behind; so did the girl. All we did was roam the room and look through other student's desks. Things have changed though since I was in school.

Sheesh...today's kids are so bombarded with sex that it is sad. We've had 10-year old girls in foster care that have babies. Sad...sad...sad.

I agree that the teacher or administration should be reprimanded - regardless of what happened in the classroom while they were gone. It is prinicple of them being unsupervised that is the problem because they could have done anything.

In regards to the fact that they chose to have sex raises the question to me what kind of homes do these children have? If they are doing this at school, they are doing it elsewhere.

People think they can ship their kids off to school and the teachers and administration is supossed to take care of every aspect of life. Kids go to school to learn math, reading and science - not morals, values and proper behavior - that should be taken care of at home.

In 5th grade my biggest dilemma was realizing that I was becoming to old to play with my Barbies!

I read this in the newspaper and about fainted! When I was in fifth grade, I was very, very naive. But that was many moons ago. Today's kids know too much too soon.

Well I think the teachers should be held responsible. Some form of discipline needs to happen. My goodness, like Kadin's Mama...I was at that age too where I was told old for Barbie.
Back when I was their age, whenever there was an assembly,EVERYONE had to go.No matter what,no one stayed behind.
It is very disturbing that kids today are learning unacceptable behaviors. They must have seen something that they shouldn't have at home somewhere.I am a parent of 3 daughters who NEVER had any kind of interest in stuff like that.My girls were in to sports and drama class.

I agree - the times have changed and kids know too much too soon. I was naive too like I said about the Barbies. I do remember hearing a story from one of the girls about her sister flipping somebody off and I had no idea what that was or what it meant. My parents didnt flip people off or cuss so I didnt know. It is all learned behavior.

Thats one heck of a statement given that you dont know any of the parents involved. They couldve seen it at school in some upperclassman's magazine, or at a party somewhere where some kid had porn on his media player, or... theres lots of possibilties. On the whole, I think in 5th grade, youre old enough to know that youre not supposed to be doing that, and youre old enough to feel like you know whats best and your parents dont. Granted the parents should teach them better, but what makes us so sure that theyll listen? The kids should be responsible for their actions, not thier parents who had nothing to do with the situation as it happened.

Just my .02

No...I don't know the parents involved, but its obvious that they have seen something somewhere.Parents do need to take responsibility for their childrens action.Parents cannot go everywhere their kids go...but still...parents still need to take responsibility for what their children do.They need to ask questions about what goes on at school ...and so on.If they(the kids) are seeing porn on another friend's ipod,computer,etc....or another student is bringing porn magazines to school in their book bag...then why shouldn't the parents be involved? Its their job.Involvement begins at home.

Somewhere, yes. At home, not necessarily. Now you say somewhere, but before you said they 'obviously saw something at home." Glad you see it my way! :p Parents cant go everywhere, of course, but when the kids are at school, arent they are the school's responsibility for those six to eight hours? The school shouldve been on the ball, that has nothing to do with the parents. The parents didnt leave the kids in class alone. The parents didnt have anything to do with this in any overt manner.

I agree that the parents should be involved, but surely you realize that if a kid sees porn at school or a party he's prolly not going to go home and tell his folks about it. And if they ask, chances are that he'll say no.

I think its just too easy to say "bad parents!" instead of actually addressing the issue, which in my view isnt really how they were raised, its more about what the hell is that school's problem! If the behavior itself is the issue, thats different, but this is about what happened at that school, not just that they had sex.

You know what, I have something to say.
You never to kids not to do something because then they will go and do. They probably learned about sex in class and were to told to be careful and not do it, so they went ahead and protested. Their idea of protesting was doing exactly what they were told not do.
You don't teach kids these kinds of things until they are old enough, and ten years old is no near old enough. Maybe at 15 or 16 when they have less crap and more brain in their head.
Most people I know of who got hooked on drugs/tobacco/alcohol started because they were told too many times not to do it. Those stupid D.A.R.E. programs they kept shoving in our faces is the number one reason I know of why my friends went and started doing that crap.
They should arrest the idiots who think they should increase education and punishment because that's whats causing all this crap.

Ok that's enough, its just that I'm adult who being treated like a child because I'm not old enough, even though I know thirteen year olds trapped in the bodies of forty year olds.

:convinced: Am I missing something? Sure, morally what they've done was wrong and shocking...but why were they arrested? On what charges? What legal mishap are they being acused of?

from USATODAY: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-04-03-students-sex_N.htm

"The students were arrested Tuesday at the Spearsville school in rural north Louisiana, authorities said. Two 11-year-old girls, a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year old boy were charged with obscenity, a felony. An 11-year-old boy, the alleged guard, was charged with being an accessory."

They are under the age of consent. That's arrestable in a lot of states even if the kids are the same age.

All these stories the past few years about grade school being a hell of a lot better than when I went.

WTF? OMG! that is just F$@ked up right there plus I blame it on their parents. They don't even protect them from things like porn and dirty magazines?

yeah, that's why the kids in Europe are a lot more responsible, yet uninhibited and free. They sell porn on the streets to anyone who wants to buy it. And, there's much more of it on TV, uncensored as well. Too much infiltration of the damn liberalism in this country. If you start telling kids, that you can't do this or that, can't look at this or that, guess what?! They will do just because it's "forbidden". And by no means I'm advocating what they did as a good thing. It's terrible. But the way we react to it, involve the media, etc.,etc. etc....Oh my, we do have a hell of a lot to learn from the Europeans........light years away....
