I would like to know when it ends too... I dont need anything now and would like to put off signing up as long as possible... fortunately I have 2 working .edu address...

also that site in Australia that you can get a free .edu address might not work because amazon actually asks what state and college you attend...

which website in Australia? I use amazon frequently, TIA

See terms & conditions: Amazon Student Terms & Conditions

"We may choose to extend this free offer for more than one year."

I suspect if you do not cancel before a year is up, they will charge you the normal cost of $79 for the next year.

Without a credit card or bank account on file, they will not be able to do so.

Amazon Prime is pretty nice. They ship the items much much faster. I used to only do free super saver shipping and that used to take 2-3 days before they would even ship it via standard ground or USPS. Now that I got Amazon Prime they almost always ship it out the same day and they almost always use 2-day air shipping, unless they know they can get away with a cheaper service and still make it on time. Amazon guarantees what day it will get there, not what shipment service they will use. Another plus, sometimes they even pay for Saturday delivery! It has gotten to the point where I really prefer ordering from Amazon because I know I will always get fast shipment.

One note of caution, one day shipping with Amazon Prime is not $3.99 per order, it's $3.99 per item. That can add up very quickly for many small items.

If you sign up for a Prime membership, you may invite up to four eligible household members living in your household (at the same address) to enjoy your Prime membership at no extra cost. (Please note that any member under age 18 may use the Amazon.com Web site only with involvement of a parent or guardian.) If you purchase a Prime membership for use by an Amazon corporate account, you may invite up to four eligible coworkers to shop for this corporate account consistent with these Terms and Conditions. The purchaser can change and/or remove invitees at any time. A guest's membership will automatically terminate if the purchaser of the membership ceases to be a member or removes the invitee.

auto-renew: turning off + more info

Thanks for the post. When I signed up, the normal option to turn OFF automatic renewal of Prime did not appear. So I had to phone Amazon and they turned it off and sent the problem to tech support. I don't know if it is because I was on a Mac. If it does not show up for you either, you can phone them at 1-866-216-1072.

The lack of auto-renewal makes me nervous, as I don't want a $79 charge sneaking up on me.

UPDATE: I saw this on another web site called S L I C K D E A L S dot N E T:
"The automatic renewal provisions in the Amazon Prime Terms & Conditions (which would require you to pay for Amazon Prime) do not apply to this membership, even if we decide to extend the free Amazon Prime offer beyond one year. "
What does invite others to use prime mean (under the account tab) does this mean to authorize others to use my prime account for free, or does it mean to invite others that have a edu. e-mail to sign up???
You can invite anyone (up to 4 others), with any email address to share your Prime account. You won't see any of their purchase and they won't see any of yours.
Family invites may say that they are only for one month (at least it was for my wife) but they also get a full year and 4 invites!!!

If you sign up for an Amazon Student membership, for the first year of that membership, you will receive one free year of Amazon Prime. We may choose to extend this free offer for more than one year. With Amazon Prime, you will be entitled to FREE Two-Day shipping and $3.99 per unit One-Day shipping on all eligible purchases for one year. The automatic renewal provisions in the Amazon Prime Terms & Conditions (which would require you to pay for Amazon Prime) do not apply to this membership, even if we decide to extend the free Amazon Prime offer beyond one year. There is no minimum purchase requirement. Amazon Student members will also be entitled to discounts and promotions, which we will communicate to you via e-mail or make available on the Amazon Student membership page at www.amazon.com/student.

Please use a current .edu e-mail address. Alumni addresses are not eligible.

This applies to graduate students as well as there is a choice for "graduate student" when signing up.

For those who are thinking about frauding the system, think again. Enrollment can easily be verified by using this website [National Student Clearinghouse - EnrollmentVerify School Participants]: EnrollmentVerify School Participants HOWEVER, for Amazon to use this to verify enrollment would cost $$ - usually something like $2-5 per enrollment check request. Rather, they can just ask YOU to provide "proof" of your enrollment - no idea what would be considered proof - and do it that way. The best advice is to at least be prepared to give them SOMETHING if you have to.

Inviting household members
Invitation works like normal! Each Student Prime account may share the Prime benefits with 4 other people like a normal paid Prime account.

Current Prime Members
You should recieve an email automatically from Amazon showing that your old Prime membership was cancelled and they are issuing a pro-rated refund. This has been confirmed by multiple members.

Deal Expires
Currently unknown – The agent I spoke to says they want to make it permanent, but who knows?

School-Specific Information
Any Northwestern Univ (Evanston, IL) undergrads should use the @northwestern.edu that is hidden in the system....ie [email protected]. your @u.northwestern.edu account will NOT be accepted for this promo. Might work for grad students too, YMMV

Does the free year of Prime start as soon as you validate or can you activate it when you want?

I have been a Prime member for 3 years. I put in my EDU address and my unused Prime membership fee was returned. So I got a refund for the unused portion of my membership fee AND I get a free year of Prime from today. Obviously, you can't lose.

It starts right when you validate.

Did this right after it was posted. My corporate Amazon.com prime account was canceled and I received a pro-rata refund. This is very cool. Thanks!

Yay! I love the amazon prime account, just not the price. Plus for being a student.

Ooooh, I want an invite so badly and I don't know any students. :(
Could anyone help me out? If so, I'll owe you big. (Maybe I'll send some "freebies" your way in the mail?) ;)

ETA: Oops. I just noticed that the invites are for household members. Darn! :(

The price is steep, no doubt! It's only worth it if you do a lot of online shopping and Amazon has competitive prices for the items you shop for.

Looks like Amazon is trying to win over the future generations. :) Amazon Prime is very convenient and super responsive. You start not wanting to order from other places because you get so used to the fast processing and value added from 2-day shipping... Which is pretty much how Amazon Prime tries to hook people to Amazon. It’s almost as I’m spoiled by same day processing and 2-day shipping now…
