Most new keyboards have a protective membrane inside the keyboard, under the keys. I've dunked mine under the sink a few times after they take a hit from a rogue cup of coffee.

How to salvage your old keyboard

If you take your old keyboard apart you will find

a bottom cover
a top cover
the keys w rubber pad
the cord attached to an electronics breadboard

take out the cord/breadboard part

run through dishwasher or car wash. Fresh keyboard.

Or you can get them free after rebate periodically from OfficeMax.
