Free McAfee anti virus, firewall, privacy director (comcast subscribers only)

Just a quick note that I just figured out comes standard with your comcast high speed internet service. On the lower right part of the homepage is a link. Sign into the security center and follow the links for downloading. It is completely free and includes automatic updates.
Many will have opinions as to how good McAfee is...Honestly I don't care. When my zone alarm labs pro ended, I will be happy to take free :)

Careful there mister...

I have Comcast and "fell" into this FREE trap. It all ain't that rosie over here in McAfee land.

There are a number os issues with this suite of computer protection - 1. McAfee does not synch to your windows logon (which means you have to sign on twice, once to your computer and again to McAfee. 2. The Privacy servie protection is based on a list of filtering words (with no consideration for page content) and I could go on for hours (and would probalby wind up as a 'High Exalted Deal Lord of the Spoofee Nation').

Before anybody signs up for this free McAfee - I highly recommend that you view all the negative posts on their Privacy Service (vers. 8) help Forum to see what you will be getting yourself into.

McAfee is also offered free to AOL users.

The Privacy Service is the part of the suite that "blocks" the bad stuff. If there is only one user on your computer and you have it set to 'Adult', you probably will not experience a lot of problems. The issues kick in when there are multiple users on your computer (who would have different age settings).

I guess the anit-virus and firewall are OK. I have not had any trouble with them.

I am not a big fan of McAfee anti-virus. It seems to be a resource hog for your computer, although it isn't quite as bad as Norton/Symantec.

McAfee is not any different than any other anti virus software out there. Comcast offers this product to assist the subscribers in having some type of protection on their system. You wanna bash it go right on ahead. But for those people who don't have any protection, whether they can't afford to buy it, or they don't know how to set the options, McAfee will suit them just fine. All you have to do is keep definitions up to date and there is nothing to worry about. Catch is, if you cancel Comcast, you can't update, therefore you get viruses. Thats not McAfee's fault.

When your Anti-virus software dates back to Win98, and you blame that on the company, you have problems. But then again, show me something thats 100% effective, I'll show you Santa.

I guess Im a little passionate about this subject, mainly because its great when people bash companys products when more than likely the reason why the product failed is because they weren't using it properly. Now I'm not saying that's the case with anyone who has posted, but in my years as a computer tech, thats been the case.

As far as the "you gotta sign in twice", there's an option to have it sign on when you open windows. You can choose to set that option if you wish.

That kind of was my point...
It's free...And keeps as many things out of my syastem as it does (which is more than if I don't have any protection)...
:hail:

Let me guess...

Sunkissezz is somehow connected to McAfee.

As passionate as you are with your support of the product, I am just as passionate with the "issues" McAfee presents to the unknowing public.

Only those of us who have installed the product, run up against the problems and gotten the "what do you expect for free" response from both the McAfee techs and the on-line (volunteer) support persons (on the mcafeehelp.com site) truly know what it is all about. Others can get a glimpse of the "issues" by looking over the posts.

There is more than one complaint, the complaints follow the same themes and McAfee has done little to correct them for over three years. Bashing is too kind a word for a company that does not take care of their subscribers.

Do you think because I am a "free" user, I give up any rights to point out the downside of McAfee??? My bashing is nothing compared to the people who bought the product and encountered problems.

Yes - your answer to signing in twice is correct, but useless if there is more than one user on your computer and those users are of different ages. McAfee says set the service to a Startup user setting to the lowest (most protected) setting. Any other user would then have to sign out of this low setting and sign in with their own setting.

If you have solution for this, I ask that you go to the McAfeehelp.com site - Privacy Service 8.0 forum, post your "fix" and become a god to all the disgruntled users and volunteer McAfee techs (whose only help has been to say "It is a feature we are working to implement in the next release").

All right. We all have our opinions. The thread is now closed.
