This is a great resource! Translate most popular languages into others (ex. English to French, Spanish to German, Portuguese to Japaneese). This is excellent for communication during emergency situations, professional interaction with international clients - Heck, wow your great grandma by sending her a note in her native lingo! You can translate up to 150 words at a time. Here are the links to both the Alta Vista and Yahoo pages ...

The translation is inaccurate at least for Chinese. I tried a few sentences from English to Chinese and here are the results:

English: Take your pills three times a day.
Chinese: Every week pick your pills three times.


English: Leave your jacket at home
Chinese: Leave your jacket family

This is my first rebuttal and I sincerely mean no dissrespect. If I remember my high school French and Spanish correctly, not all translations are exactly literal. Although this may cause some confusion (which, of course in my examples of an emergency or an important business presentation, is important to consider) I think that the free service might be of benefit to those wishing to engage in general conversation. I spent the last 18 months serving as an Americorps VISTA for the American Red Cross Disaster Services and found that this assistance is a tremendous resource to nonprofit agencies - especially considering the fact that most NPA's do not have the $100 per 1/2 hour (in my area) to pay for the service. However, I was not aware of the World Lingo website and have it bookmarked for future reference. Thanks for your info!

I think for chatting with someone it would be fine. I only meant for taking pills...no room for errors like that. ;)
 
I like fried chicken and green beans translated to German comes out as:

"I have taste of the cockerel frito and the green beans"

:doh:

They will usually work in a pinch when you are trying to find out what someone is saying in another language, you'll get the general gist... You may look pretty silly if you depend on it to translate things to send to native speakers of another language
