Google has purchased Picasa and is giving their software for free. Picasa can be used to manage your digital photos. The software will transfer photos from your digital camera, organize, edit, print, and you can even order prints with it. Use to be $29 before Google purchased this company.

spyware or no?

My only worry, is it spyware infested? Anyone check yet?

Hide :hmm:

I doubt it, considering it's from Google.

Picasa/spyware

Well, I downloaded it, and about an hour later I could no longer connect to the internet. My computer connects directly to cable, and our other computer, which is on a wireless adapter, was still online.
The people at Comcast were sure that I was receiving a full signal, and suggested I may have gotten spyware on my computer.
So I did a system restore, and was able to reconnect.
And Picasa was gone.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like spyware to me. I'll pass on this one.

Sorry for repeat/fast post but try downloading the free version of Ad-Aware. But this is important, actually configure it to do some work. By default its not all the way on. Click "check for updates" and follow thru. Once done updating then click start once but not the second time. Then click "customize" then basically turn everything thats red (means it will not be checked) to green. One of the most important things about a spyware check is to scan the "Host File" and that isnt on by default. Turn this on. The host file is a file inside the windows system that tells your PC what servers to look at for what website. If this is hijacked (and often is by spyware) then even though you might appear to be spyware free, you could still get some odd websites poping up or odd searches. Oh ya, download the free "VX2 pluggin" too, just to ad on to ad aware

The other thing, system restore working makes me think it might have not been spyware... Restoring is for returning system settings. Maybe something else got wacked out? Download this sofware again AFTER running a full system scan with Ad-Aware then reinstall, run ad aware again. See if it found anything new or returning. Please report your results here so we can all see and analyze.

Thanks

Ad-Aware download here: http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button

VX2 cleaner here (click on the red "here" under how to use lava soft's vx2 cleaner) http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/plugins/vx2cleaner.shtml

Also, turn off Windows Messenger. Either get the free pluggin from Ad-awares pluggins or turn it off manually.

It tries to access internet. But u can disable it if u have firewall. This may be a part of google's attempt to match with M$'s search engine

Also, install spybot search & destroy 1.3 and use its "Resident IE" option to block any spyware/adwares that would be downloaded as & when you visit any web sites.

visit www.doxdesk.com and www.auditmypc.com for more info on how to tweak/tune your pc for reducing potential threats.

thanks

it's not spyware -- but it does try to connect to the internet -- i just didn't let it and i have no problems

Version 2 is just awesome. I used it to teach a class on digital photography and the students were very impressed as to how easy it was to edit their photos. The best feature is probably the red eye reduction and how easy it is to email the photo.
