Thought I would bump this since 8.04 is now out which is a "long time support" version. The CD can be booted to try linux before you install. It can also be installed as a windows application, installed as a dual boot, or a replacement to windows.

For those who think linux is more complicated... My retired mother would always call with windows problems. Last summer replaced her operating system with ubuntu and the calls stopped. She finds it much easier to use, and it has been much more stable. I switched over my laptop but my wife wanted keep windows on her laptop. However, now that she has tried ubuntu, she routinely boots up my computer rather than hers.

There are linux versions of many programs, a linux replacement for most everything else (ie openoffice which is a free office program that reads M$ files, gimp which is a free graphics editor that is just as powerful as photoshop, etc.) Best of all, these and nearly all programs are completely free. If you have some special program that is only available for windows, well you can still run it using Wine.
