Haven't seen this mentioned at all on Spoofee, but it generated much discussion (because it started as a "potential hot deal") on some other deal sites. There are 188 stores closing (all US it sounds) and ~2500 people being laid off. The scavenging started maybe 4/1, and there may not be much left by now. I haven't checked my local store myself. But Spoofers should at least know. Some people reported exceptional deals.

I heard about that, though I'm wondering whether or not they're really gonna do a fire sale...since it's such short notice, are they just gonna sell what's leftover through their website instead?
If they are having a firesale, I should go, I'm thinking about getting a cheap laptop :D

Poor Gateway. I remember when they were top notch. My system is one of the last Gateways that were put together with quality in mind.

I've bought 3 full Gateways, all of my computers, but will never buy one from them again because of their loss of quality and sell out.

Reminiscing

Yeah man, gw2k used to be top tier computing. What happened? I used to swear by them, but now i'd rather get an HP. Perhaps it happened with the gateway purchasing emachines. O well, there's always alienware now!

yes, alianware
sell your car, and maybe you can afford the case

I went to gateway today...their laptops and pcs were not on clearence at my store, so i'm assuming they're going ot send it back to the gateway warehouse....so no good deals on laptops and pcs unfortunatly..

I am one of the employees about to lose their jobs this Friday. Everything in the store is now on clearance or on sale. Mostly computers, LCD's, and plasmas are not clearanced, but now they are 15% off the retail price. Get them while they are hot.

I feel bad for all the Gateway employees losing their jobs, but Gateway really has become terrible. I remember that around the era of my 400MHz from 1997 to when I have my current machine which is a P4 1.8GHz, they were always on top. Now, I'd literally rather have an HP, I agree.

What's up with the comment about "i'd rather have an HP..."? I've read a couple of posts lately like that. Are HP's just a notch up from a "terrible" Gateway? I'm the one that just bought the HP Pavilion Athlon XP3000+ in the other post. Is the implication that HP is poor quality too?

HP isn't really poor quality, at least not in my opinion. But it's like a shift from quality custom order Gateway to something like HP which is sold in a retail store. HP makes quality machines, they're just not really customizable like Gateways used to be. Gateway has now moved down to retail like HP, but to me, their current quality is worse than HP.

It's just the step down from custom order Gateway/Dell style to the new Gateway/HP/Compaq style retail distribution.

Compaq used to be top-notch as well

Yeah. Companies like Gateway, HP, and Compaq used to be the bomb. Back in 1996-97 we used to sell only HP and Compaq servers. Now people only want to hear Dell for brand names. And to be frank I don't blame them. Even when my family members come to me and ask me for a brand name PC to buy I suggest only Dell (I refuse to build and support PCs for family members anymore :)

Don't get me wrong. If you got a great deal here for an HP computer, stick with it. I personally just don't like to use them. I have worked with them all too often and know what types of short-cuts they take (e.g. Ram types, etc.).

Because I like to overclock and stuff I couldn't do that with an over-the-counter PC (HP, Compaq, etc.). I prefer to spend less and get more (over-clocking). My current PC is an AMD 1.83Ghz w/ 333FSB (alias = AMD 2500+) overclocked to 2.4Ghz w/ 400FSB (stable with Prime95 - free testing software). With the correct cooling in the case (nothing too expensive) I was able to save approximately $500+ instead of building a 2.4Ghz AMD computer.

Still, you have to learn a little bit about these things before you can jump into them to save money. Most people don't really care about the fastest processor, ram, extra cache, etc. Which is fine and functional. There are just some of us that are picky for quality (Which is something Dell still does). So thats why an over-the-counter PC serves most people's needs (especially when you get a good deal on them *spoofee style :)

Dell can be bad sometimes, like for example, I think a while back I fried a home-built 1.8GHz with my friend or something because I replaced the power supply with a Dell one. A geek at my local computer store alerted me that Dell uses propriatary power supplies and that the processor is gone, hey, what did I know?

Still though, the new Dells come nicely built, they're the only ones I recommend anymore. The build quality is just fantastic and their quality control is great, as well as the prices.

I still don't have a problem with HP though... but Dell is definitely my higher end first choice.

I only build my own. Unless you want a really basic system, do it yourself is the only way to go. I priced out an Alienware system and built the same system myself for about half the price they wanted.

....but without the alien case, of course.
