I need some help. On my W2k desktop pc, my partition got corrupted and my pc wouldn't boot. I tried to delete my primary partition and reload Windows, but it still wouldn't boot. I installed another hard drive and finally I have W2k loaded again, but when I plugged in my old hard drive, it only showed up ONE 120 GB drive. It should have been 3 40GB drives(120GB drive, split 40/40/40).

My question is.... There has to be software available to recover some of the files. This is the first time that I've ever ran into this kind of problem. I've corrupted Windows in the past... reloaded Windows, and problem solved.

I'm only concerned with saving the pictures of my son. I don't have a backup and I lose ALL of his pictures..... :(

Probably one of the best programs I've seen is SpinRite from GRC.com. You can read more about it here. It is a bit much at $89, but it should do the trick.

Plus it has a 30 day guarantee if it doesn't work.

lol... am i the only one who saw this post this morning and thought-- "i won't say anything cuz spaz will know the answer" ;)

Oh boy. One of these days I'm going to feel like a retard because I won't know an answer. LOL

Thanks guys!

I have 2 other freeware programs to try first, and if they don't work, I'll be trying your suggestion!

I don't mind losing everything else, but I REALLY want those pictures!

I do computer backups on my job everyday but failed to do my own at home. Ironic, huh?

Hmm Spaz, here is a problem which my old computer had, and it is reallllly confusing.

Ok so, my cousin built me a computer and so, I used it. After a few months of usage, the computer would randomly turn off after I turned it on. My cousin and I was wondering if it was a battery or voltage problem or w/e, but when we got a bigger battery thing (hey, idk what we were doing, he was, excuse my bad descriptions, haha)
the computer still shut off. Like, when I pressed the power button, it would turn on and you could hear the CPU getting ready but after about 5-10 seconds it would turn off. Luckily, the problem went away after a few weeks, but it came back later on. We couldnt even load up to the setup menu, the computer would be off by then......any ideas or suggestions as to whats up?

We need an "Official Ask Spaz a Computer Question" thread sticky. ;)

Hello Apocalypse716. It could be a bad power supply, which is what I'm guessing the "bigger battery thing" is that you've already replaced.

But the more likely culprit is that your power button is sticking. If it is held for four seconds or so, it will turn off the computer. Does it come out all the way when you turn on the computer?

I'm SLOWLY getting the pictures off the drive using some freeware some else recommended on another board I frequent.

It's called Smart Recovery... the software is on www.download.com

I'd still like to get the other data off the drive so i'd still take recommendations on tools to get my other files. Free stuff of course... :)

yah it definately comes out, i know that if you hold it for an x amount of seconds it turns off, so I dont think thats the problem. H/e, it could be sticking inside the tower, for all I know ( if its possible).

Thanks for yor suggestion

:hmm: ...some other thoughts.

More likely:
The power supply is bad/overheating.
The computer is drawing too much power from the power supply.

Less likely:
The CPU is overheating.
The BIOS is corrupted.

Is there anyone near you that can test it for cheap or free?

DOH! I forgot about one of my other favorite programs too. It's called PC Inspector File Recovery. It is FREE! :claps:

Tried that one Spaz... no workie for me. The Smart recovery software from them works, but it's VERY slow. It's been going for 3 hours and its still on 3 percent. :|

And some of the pictures are exploded in size. One picture i noticed was 255MB!!

If you know Linux, get a Live CD and boot your machine . In Linux you can copy files to your working hard drive. I did this a couple of times, so far it worked all the time.

Yeah I think there is, but it seems to be worth too much trouble. I got a new Dell a few years afterwards, and its amazing. Its kept up really well, and I dont have a need for it anymore. Thanks for the input, greatly appreciated.
