As many of you already know I am a full time college student (non-traditional). I have been on break for the last 3 or 4 weeks, and really been enjoying my time off. My children have developed a deep concern for me because my hobbies have changed and I have developed some new habits, as they call it. LOL They have been concerned about my "strange" new interests, which what do they know they think I am strange because I love to read.:) So who better to discuss this with than my family here in Spoofeeland. ;)

The new hobbies and habits (which some of them are not new such as crocheting, it is just what I am doing with the crocheting) I have developed are as follows and I have a few questions in regards to some of them. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have always liked to crochet and I recently cleaned out all of my yarn and rolled up all my scrap yarn into yarn balls and started crocheting those scrap balls of yarn into 7" X9" squares. When I get enough squares done I will send them to Warm Up America, where they will take the squares and sew them together to make blankets which in turn will be donated to those in need. My children are concerned about this and wonder why I just don't throw those scrap balls of yarn away, but I just can't being the penny pincher that I am LOL . I am now in search of other charity organizations who take crocheted items that they donate to those in need. I really enjoy crocheting and would like to contribute to reputable organizations. If anyone has links or whatever please feel free to clue me in.

Secondly, I have developed an interest in infomercials and have watched some on some items that I am extremely interested in, such as the CriCut, Tobi steam iron, PedEgg and several others. Has anyone ever ordered any of these items or other items off of these infomercials? I am curious to know the quality of the items and if anyone had any problems?

Thirdly, I have become interested in watching QVC and HSN. I have never really watched these channels before until now but have seen some things that I would really like to have. My question regarding this is what are the quality of the items like and if you choose to make the flex payments how does that work? I realize they can make things look really good on tv, but I am still interested LOL . Has anyone ever ordered anything from QVC or HSN? If so is one network better or worse to deal with?

Well, I think I have finished now. I am glad they are now longer concerned about my spoofee habit. They have adjusted to me spending time here and really enjoy the freebies I have gotten :claps:

Thank you in advance to listening to me vent and any input or feedback is greatly appreciated. Eventually, my concerned children will adapt (I hope) and maybe they will quit telling their friends how "weird and strange" their mother is. LOL

:convinced: I'm with the kids......:hahaha:.....you need professional help! LOL Fast....:faint:

:p

LOL Geesh LOL I thought I would find someone who was on my side ;)

I have to agree with Preco, you need a REAL hobby

:o
Any suggestions of what a REAL hobby would consist of?

:ohwell:
Here I thought I was doing something good by staying home with my children and doing things for a good cause like crocheting for a charity.:( Guess I could take up drinking and hang out in the bars and watch football and boxing.

I think it is wonderful you are making stuff for children in need. Here's a couple of links for you:

Ronald McDonald House
Check the telephone listings for the Ronald McDonald house in your community, or find contact information online at www.rmhc.com.

Hugs for the Homeless Animals Project
Make security blankets or “snuggles” for homeless, lost or abandoned dogs and cats that end up in Humane Society shelters. The snuggles are a warm reprieve from those hard, cold kennel floors and cages. For information, call 262/767-9200, email [email protected], or visit www.h4ha.org.

Project Linus
Named after cartoonist Charles Schultz’ Peanuts character Linus who carries his blanket everywhere, Project Linus provides blankets to comfort seriously ill and traumatized children. For information, call 309/664-7814, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.projectlinus.org

Cornucopia of Quilt Links

Finally:
Check your local hospital or ambulance service. The ambulance service here will take blankets or stuffed toys to give to children that are scared or seriously injured. Most of the time kids are injured in rollovers in our county. We can't go nearly a week without at least one or two.

Put down the remote and step away from the television.

You have fallen victim to the subliminal QVC/HSN messages.

Come back tomorrow and we will discuss the fake moon landings.

Guess I could take up drinking and hang out in the bars and watch football and boxing.

Don't forget baseball. The weather is almost perfect for it!

As far as the other stuff - don't worry. You are setting a good example for your kids and some day they will "get it".

The charity work is cool, it's the other stuff that worries me.

I'm just worried that your turning into their GRANDMA instead of their mom with habits like that... YIKES!

I can respect the crocheting and the not wasting the yarn, but the infomercials and the shopping channels are "woo-hoo" crazy!

But if it is what you enjoy and relaxes you then to hades with the rest of us!

Some people might think hanging out on a freebie website is a weird hobby. :p

I think this is a great thing:bigok: .. maybe teach your kids to do this with you?.. Then you are doing it with them and teaching them a valuable lesson at the same time

Just my two cents, but I'm thinking maybe this is your way of what I call zoning out.. Just escaping for a few moments to collect your thoughts and not think about anything. Going to school and raising children at the same time is mentally and physically draining. How about taking walks with the kids, going to the library, take them to the playground and you grab yourself a good book - one for enjoyment!! Is the watching tv overshadowing spending time with them? Maybe that's the problem, instead of what you are actually doing. I in no way am trying to assume that you don't spend time with your kids, so please don't take it that way. I'm just offering suggestions.

My husband is too sweet to actually say so, but I can tell he's concerned about my obsession w/ Spoofee and w/ freebies. I suspect he thinks my freebies are just junk that clutter up the house!

Oh no I am not taking offense, my kids and I spend a lot of quality together. I think I am just getting older LOL and my interests are changing. We still go to the local parks and play football etc and as far as tv watching I used to never watch tv and I think because now that I do they don't really know what to think about it. We like to play board games and cards so that is still a great family activity that we do together. Actually, I think they are just really picking on me. School is getting harder for me and I am preparing for grad school which will be even tougher. And you are probably right I am just zoning out. My children's hobbies consist of xbox (any type of gaming really), skateboarding, motorcross and stuff like that. And they are getting older too, they are now 13 and 17, so just about anything I like to them is old fashioned. LOL I don't really like to shop malls and things just aren't my thing although I do go because the kids enjoy going. I haven't become a big couch potato, I am still very active, it's just that I have become interested in different things here lately. Thank you for your input!! I am still curious to know if anyone has ever ordered anything from QVC or HSN. I may just have to break down and order something and see for myself LOL I have seen some neat things on there that I would like to have.

Thank you so much for the links!! I will definitely check into these. I crochet quite a bit, my grandmother taught me when I was very young, and I make a lot of afghans and they just sit around and I would rather give them away and let someone get some use out of them. I am an animal lover also so I would not mind donating them to the humane society. A dog or cat would not care what color they are or what they look like. LOL You guys are the greatest!!!!

YIKES is right, about turning into their grandma!!! LOL I realize that I am getting old but I am not THAT old yet. LOL I have never watched tv much and for some unknown reason the shopping channels and infomercials caught my attention. That little Cricut thing looks really neat, for scrapbooking and such. And actually the kids could use it when they have projects to do for school. Maybe the shopping channels are just a passing phase although I saw some neat kitchen gadgets on there that I would like to have (to help cook the meals of the two growing boys I am raising)
