I am a practicing vegetarian...meaning there are certain meats I am having a very difficult time getting out of my diet. Mainly chicken and seafood.
I've never really ate a lot of red meat to begin w/, but after going to PETA's website and watching all of their videos I decided to become a vegetarian.
So PETA sends me stuff in the mail all the time. Last week I recieved a bunch of stickers. Amber stumbled across them and was curious about them. On one of the stickers it shows a rat in a cage and it says "Unseen They Suffer, Unheard They Cry, In Agony They Linger and In Loneliness They Die" Of course this left her w/ a lot of questions.
My dilema: How do I bring this up to her? I WILL NOT show her the videos. Not only is she too young to watch that, but she is super sensitive to animal cruelty(me too...I cried watching every one of those videos). I would love for her to become a vegetarian, but I wouldn't push it on her. I'm having a very hard time w/ this and don't really know what to tell her.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

Butty...I am the same way you are.I do not eat any red meat, but I do eat poultry and fish.I am not a complete vegan because I still drink milk and eat dairy products.I have low blood calcium so dairy products is a must.As far as the PETA videos,I cannot watch them either. But as far as your daughter is concerned and depending on her age, just let her decide on her own if she wants to follow in your footsteps. All daughters want to be like mom.Just explain to her that animals are to be loved...and take it from there.I don't know what else to say.
I am only trying to add my two cents.

Thank you soo much for your two cents, MrsK! I don't think she fully understands that meat comes from cute animals. If I brought it up to her that way I KNOW she would never eat meat again. I don't think that is a tactful way to let her know.

They're not all cute

Oh...No MrsK....there is no need to apologize. I'm sorry, I didn't explain that better. I just meant that I think that would do more harm then good. I just asked her if she knows where certain foods come from and she answered me like I was the dummy. :o What she doesn't know is how they die so people can eat them.

Dan....that big pig...is...uh.....cute too. ;)

I would just let her decide if she wants to be a vegetarian or what not.My family teases me because I don't eat meat ALL of the time.I just prefer not to.And its my choice.

I am not a vegaterian, but my younget sons (9yrs).He wont eat alot of meat. He decided this on his own. If it were me I would explain to you child that you got tried of eating meet so your not eating it now. As for the bumper sticker, I would tell her what it represents in modifacation give her some but not all the details.

ive been a vegetarian (no chicken or seafood) since i was 12. i remember when i was 5 we had just run through mickey d's and i got a hamburger happy meal. we drove past a cow pasture and my dad jokingly said that was where my hamburger came from. i think that was the last time i ever ate red meat. im an adult and ive never seen a PETA video and i dont want to. so i see why you dont want amber to watch it either. id just tell her that sometimes animals are hurt when scientists do tests on them and that you personally dont agree w/animal testing or the way they are treated before they become food which is why you dont eat meat. i dont know how you can gently tell a child about the slaughter and abuse of animals. good luck

Butty I agree with misbb. But I agree with sampler too.I would not tell her how they kill animals for that McDonalds or Wendys burger.
But Butty tell her its ok if she decides to not become a vegetarian and if she wants to eat meat, thats ok too.

A rat in a cage doesnt necessarily link to vegetarianism. Thats more about anti-vivisection and being against all the other animal testing too. You dont have to show her any of the videos or even address meat eating at all. Just explain to her that sometimes animals like rats or other rodents (dont tell her about the bunnies) are used to test new medicines or whatever, and some people think its wrong; like the people who made the stickers.

If you want to address eating meats...

Youve also got to realize that PETA is showing you the MOST inhumane, MOST shocking, MOST extreme examples of a generally cruelty free industry. If it wasnt, the pressure from the various watchdog groups like the ASPCA, etc would force the government to make a change in its guidelines for the FDA if the conditions themselves didnt spark the change first.

For the record, there are lots of different types of vegetarians. Pesco vegetarians, for example, don’t eat poultry, beef or pork but they do eat fish. Pollo vegetarians avoid red meat and fish but eat chicken. Pesco-pollo vegetarian avoids red meat but eats chicken and fish. There are even fruitarians, who only eat seeds, nuts, fruit, and vegetables classified as fruit like eggplant, and avocados. Lacto vegetarians eat no meat or eggs, but eat (or drink) dairy products. Conversely, there are ovo vegetarians, who eat eggs but don’t consume dairy products. Vegans avoid all animal proteins and animal by-products. A lacto ovo vegetarian eats mostly plant foods, but also eats eggs and dairy products. Then theres the pesco-ovo, pesco-lacto-ovo, etc.

Point of the above being, Amber can choose what she will and wont eat. Being a vegetarian doesnt preclude any foods except beef apparently.

My thing is, if you can eat all these other meats, whats so vegetarian about that? In that case, Im a pollo-pesco-ovo-lacto-beefo-vegetarian. The fact that theres no term for one who eats beef (aside from carnivore) makes me think that all you need to do is not eat cows to be a vegetarian.

I call myself a vegetarian, because every once in awhile I will have some sort of chicken. In my opinion, meat just isn't healthy for you. And inhumane animal treatment has gone on forever. You cannot humanely kill any animal. If you eat seafood and chicken, they too are killed.

If we arent supposed to eat meat, why havent out teeth evolved into plant-eaters' teeth instead of retaining the shape of the carnivore's teeth? Even in the bible god gives express permission to eat meat. (Devils advocate, I aint judging nobody.)

Of course, I feel that way about milk. I think its bad to drink the milk of another species, and to drink milk past the point of being weaned off your momma's milk. No other animals do that in the wild (Im pretty sure) and I believe theres a reason for that.

I think the term you're looking for is 'omnivore" ;)

Yeah, but my way was funnier. Beefo makes me laugh-o.

BTW, if Im a carnivore for eating red meat, and an omnivore for eating everything, why arent people called herbivores instead of vegans?

Shouldn't that be 'bovo'? Then you can have buffalo, too.
And where does pork fit in?
or venison?

Apparently vegetairans eat only chicken and dairy amd seafood. Poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, etc. I assume that any meat product coming from a mammal is off-limits?

A true vegan doesn't eat any dairy products or to put it bluntly...anything that has a face.I am a vegetarian too and I do eat dairy products and chicken ,but I have low blood calcium and need the dairy products for the calcium.
