If you live in the small village of Nachu in Kenya, watch out, because a group of approximately 300 marauding monkeys is out to steal your food, sexually harass your women and attack and kill your livestock! In a truly amazing incidence of interspecies communication, a group of vervet monkeys, Cercopithecus aethiops, is using sexual harassment to intimidate women and children, who are responsible for growing maize, potatoes, beans and other crops for their farming community, causing them to lose their main food supply so they now are dependent upon famine relief to survive.

And why aren't the men of the tribe taking care of these monkeys?
After all, the men of the tribe are the ones who have the true right to harass the women and take the food.

While it was not unusual for the monkeys to harass the women and be less afraid of them than they are of the men, according to the Kenyan Wildlife Service, the service had never before heard of monkeys making sexually explicit gestures as a form of communication to humans. Despite their new problems with the monkeys, it is a criminal offence to harm or kill any of them, so the besieged villagers must figure out a way to outwit the monkeys instead.

i just wanna see what kind of "gestures" they were using and how it could be THAT intimidating! i mean, why don't the women carry guns??

"When we come to chase the monkeys away, we are dressed in trousers and hats, so that we look like men," said Nachu resident Lucy Njeri. "But the monkeys can tell the difference and they don't run away from us and point at our breasts. They just ignore us and continue to steal the crops."

Further, the monkeys also make sexually explicit gestures at the women, according to the residents.

"The monkeys grab their breasts, and gesture at us while pointing at their private parts. We are afraid that they will sexually harass us," said Njeri.

PUT ON A SHIRT!!!!!

I think these women have grounds for a law suit....

In deference to respecting the anthropological differences of these folks, I think the solution is simple. CUT OFF their aid, and allow them to figure out a solution more benefical to their circumstances. While I appreciate that many species are borderline with regard to extinction, no animal should OUT THINK an entire village for heaven sakes. What, the monkies graduated from Harvard, or were they trained by the CIA in terror tactics?!?!?! Shucks, if the monkeys are that intelligent, they deserve the crops. Fire off some cap guns, toss a few rocks that them, put up a smoke pot, something to deter the monkies from invading the fields. But really come on now........:mmph:

It is called MIMICRY!!! So what dirty old man or pervert taught the monkies the gestures?!?!?!?! The village folks need to keep the curtains drawn at night!!! ;)

To quote part of monkfish's post:

What moron made that law? Give the villagers a couple of shotguns and 3-4 boxes of shells. Those monkeys will learn some manners in a heartbeat.

Those monkeys have been watching MTV

Leave those poor monkeys alone. Whay is it humans that have ther supreme right of everything? It's not the monkeys' fault. For those "humans", clearly, the evolutionary split has not yet happened deep in Kenya's savannas...and the monkeys see those tribes as their rivals, rightfully so.
