How do you make 4 Gallons of Water Using a 3 Gallon / 5 Gallon Jug?

This is a classic from Die Hard 3 (rr at least that's where I saw it first)

"Sitting on the lip of a fountain in a park are a 5-gallon jug and a 3-gallon jug. The timer will stop if they place a jug containing 4 gallons of water on a scale attached to the bomb."

How do you make 4 gallons of water using a 5-gallon jug and a 3-gallon jug?

rule #1 : You cannot do Google searches to find the answer
rule #2 : You cannot do Google searches to find the answer
rule #3 : You only have 2 jugs and no not that kind of jugs

hint : Here is half of the answer

Fill the 5 gal, pour out into 3 gal.....2 remain.....pour into another receptacle.....repeat and put on scale  no boom :blushing:

ETA: Highlight to see, no google search....:shhh:I'm not a cheater like Ultimate....

I did a google search, LOL :teeth: but that's just ME! I won't post the answer though, OR WILL I? MUAAAHHHA HA HA HA HA HA HA

ooooo ooooo I know this one ... it was in a TombRaider video game.... oh but that was forever ago...... lol

3 gallons 3 times = 9 gallons
9 gallons - 5 gallons = 4 gallons.
no boom

no boom

My solution was less work........no heavy lifting neither....

Highlight for the solution

no boom :blushing:

You can't do it that way - You only have the two containers available.

There is a way to do it with only the two containers and no, I didn't search for it.

Highlight to see the solution - fill up 3 gallon jug, pour into 5 gallon jug. Fill up 3 gallon jug again and fill up 5 gallon jug with it. There is now one gallon left in the 3 gallon jug. Empty 5 gallon jug, pour the 1 gallon into the 5 gallon jug, refill 3 gallon jug and pour into 5 gallon jug. There are now 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

 thoreau's way was the way I did it in the video game lol And I only had 2 jugs to work with (if i remember correctly) :yesnod:

Spoiler alert!

Oh, comon people.....that's easy... And yes, you ONLY have 2 containers.

A little bit of critical thinking and thinking "outside of the box", and you come up with the answer

1. Fill up 3 to the top
2. Pour contents into 5, (now 5 has exactly 3 gallons in it)
3. Fill up 3 to the top
4. Start pouring into into 5 until you top 5 off (then 3 will have exactly 1 gallon in it)
5. Empty 5
6. Pour 3 (1 gallon) into it.
7. Fill up 3 to the top and empty it inside the 5, making exactly 4 gallons of water in the 5 gallon tank.

I concede, if I had 3 jugs.....that just wouldn't be right....

And, by the way if you want my solution to the problem, see my post above

kiddha

fill up the five gallon.
from that five gollon...fill up the three gallon
now u r left with 2 gallon in 5 gallon jug. 3 gallon in 3 gallon jug
pour the 3 gallon out
put the remaining two gallons in the three gallon jug
FILL the five gallon again
start pouring into the 3 gallon jug(which already has 2 gallon of water in it)
and waLLah u arel left with 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

another solution

anothe way of doing it can be

fill up the three gallons
pour it in the 5 gallon jug
now u have 3 gallon in 5 gallon. 0 gallon in three gallon jug
fill up the three gallon again.
pour into 5 gallon until full.
now 5 gallon is full and u r left with 1 gallon in 3 gallon jug.
dump the 5 gallon out.
pour the 1 gallon in the 5 gallon jug
fill up the 3 gallon again.
pour it into the 5 gallon jug(which already has 1 gallon in there)
waLLah...u got ur self 4 gallons and another way to solve this.

I'm still workin on more ways to solve this.

*ahem* Obviously you were distracted by the jugs.......basically my solution was the same....:doh:and I said it first....

*ahem* No it wasn't........a 3-jugger cheater, you!
