I figured it would be more appropriate to ask here rather than in the deals thread...

if you buy these internal burners and want to make an external out of it, what do you have to do or buy? any converters?

it seems strange that you see pricing for an internal for one brand for about 25 bucks, then an external of that same type from the same brand being over a hundred bucks......what gives?

just buy a usb or firewire enclosure (external box with a fan and internal components to convert ide to usb or firewire) that is at least 5.25". they are pretty cheap, i bought one for a dvdrw internal drive. i can hot plug the usb cord into my laptop and windows xp recognizes the drive as a usb device. nero recognizes too.

here are just a few examples:

good luck.

thanks a lot

this seems more like it
"
Meritline USB 2.0 Aluminum 5.25" External Enclosure for DVD-RW/CD-RW Drives, USB2.0 Case with Built-in Universal Power Supply and Fan
"

but how come when i was searching some of them through those links, they make the specs seem like the stuff built in the enclosure can only support certain types like, the above, said dvd-rw/cd-rw drives........well, what about dual layered dvd burner drives, and dvd+r drives?

its all IDE, so if you put in a 3.5" drive, or 5.25" cdrw or dual layer dvdrw it doesnt matter, they probably list out the types of drives for people who are not sure what IDE drives include. you can get enclosures that are SATA too. other options are getting enclosures that have USB, Firewire or both USB and Fireware converters. Also, you can buy a smaller 3.5" enclosure just for a drive.

btw, the dvdrw internal drive i put into my enclosure is dual layer, an NEC from newegg

What are your computer specs?

It's easier & you can save yourself a lot of time to just buy an external hd that is already assembled with a hd in it. This is for people that are inexperienced.

If you get an external box & do it yourself, you have to get the right chipset in the box that matches your hd & computer.....

well...i have an external hd that i got from the buffalo brand last year in black friday......

I don't know how to pry it apart to use it for a internal dvd burner drive...any suggestions?

by the way....so the 3.5" or the 5.25" cases will do? I can squeeze in a smaller enclosure for a larger drive?

the 3.5" enclosures only house hardrives (like from seagate, western digital, maxtor). the 5.25" enclosures can house both hardrives and cd or dvd drives (the cd and dvd drives are bigger, and will not fit into a 3.5" enclosure)

whats wrong with the buffalo drive that you have to open it? is it an external hardrive or a dvd drive? model number?

it's an external harddrive, i'm just not that techy of a person, so I don't want to try to pry it apart and have some things end up missing.
