This really sucks (pardon my language, but it really does!) I had a Khakariki - a New Zealand native parolet -named Cam O'Flague. He occupied the spare bedroom cause he was used to being out of the cage. Obviously, we had to ensure that he was safe from our cat, Pantera! but he would be allowed to fly freely throught our home for a few hours everyday while that cat enjoyed her afternoon nap behind the closed door of our bedroom. This had been the daily routine, without any incident, for the last 7 years. But for some unknown reason, last Saturday Cam decided to try to escape from his room when I went to let Pantera! out of our bedroom. Cam was caught when I tried to close the door to "his" room and I accidentally squashed his little head! OMG guys - it was so ****in terrible. I wouldn't wish that moment on my very worst enemy. I was soooo hysterical! He was flailing about, running in circles, blood everywhere...I scooped him up and held him while he died within seconds --- I was so insane with grief! I still can't go into that room without crying like a blubbering idiot. Even my hubby, David, who hasn't shed a tear since his dad died two years ago, was distraught. This really so freakin sucks! On Monday, David and I bought our new Zebra Finches (that I named Archie and Edith, imagine that!) but we still so miss Cam's "saying" pretty bird, good bird, I love you, hello and baby bird when he woke us every mornig. Am I insane for being so sad? Thanks for reading this...

I am sooooooooooo sorry this happened. It was an accident, and you need to keep telling yourself that. I don't really know what to say. I know it is hard. I have a friend who accidentally killed her bird when it flew into the washing machine and she didn't know. Things just happen unfortunately sometimes. Hopefully time will heal this wound.

Pm'd you Ladymez. SOOOO sorry.

I agree with Sunbeam that it is awful but for some reason birds do meet with some awful fates. I worked with a woman that had had this beautiful bird for years that had free reign in the house (no kids or other pets). One night she was preparing oil on the stove to deep fry something and the bird literally dive bombed into the hot fat!! It was just horrible. Her vet reassured her she did nothing wrong and said that birds can be very unpredictable even when you've had them a long time.

She did mourn the bird for a long time but like yourself got other birds to continue to feel nuturing and connected. I think more love is a great healing tool. Thinking of you:loving:

TYVM sunbeam and Sweetwinter - I know I'll get over this eventually but for now it helps to know that I'm obviously not alone.

sorry about your loss...

truly heartbreaking~ Take comfort in the fact that you cared for & gave your birdie a good life for all these years. Hopefully, you'll feel better after a while.

OMG!!! That is horrible!!!! I can't even imagine- I am so sorry for your loss.

Wow!! My heart is broken for you!! As already stated, it was an accident...don't blame yourself...I can't imagine the pain you feel... *lots of hugs*

I'm so sorry for your loss, ladymez. You just lost a member of your family so there's nothing insane about you being so sad. I hope the new birds give you as much joy as Cam did :hugs:

Ladymez...i am so sorry to hear about your loss.I have a 7 year old parakeet and would be heartbroken if an accident happened to him. Please accept my deepest condolences.

Oh ladymez, how traumatizing and awful...... I can only imagine. These things happen, these odd quirky incidents/accidents, no matter how hard we try....my heart aches for you. So sorry mez.....

I'm sorry...I know first hand how attached one can get to their pets as they ARE part of the family. Losing a family member is never easy.

:hugs: for ladymez & hubby.

unfortunately i had a similar experience with my pet hamster... So i really know your pain. =/

:bawling: OMG! That is one of my worst nightmares

I have a bird also, Cockatiel named Oliver, for 24 years. I'm always worried that when he is out that I might step on him or he may get hurt.

 I feel terrible about Cam :creep:

I am so sorry to read about this...

Thanks so very much everyone for your very kind words of support. I've been offline a few days in order to prepare and welcome a whole flock o'finches into our home! I'm now the proud owner of: Archie, Edith, Momma, PaPa, Baby, Harlequein, Buddy and Julia Alyssa Thomas! (My grandson, Jake, named the "diva" of the bunch). Even though these happy lil singing sweeties will never replace my ol pal, rest assured they will never be let out of their cages!

Thanks again for thinking of me. I really appreciate all of my wonderful Spoofee friends! :hugs: And if you ever need a finch, you know who to call :)

Sorry about your loss.. any thoughts of getting a new pet?
