All righty men... I need your expert advice!

I am going to be buying a new electric shaver for hubby for Christmas. Nope. He will not use a "real" razor. Just won't do it. So electric is the only way I can go. About 4 years ago, I bought him a Braun Syncro with the cleaning system, etc., but we've both been really disappointed in it. It shaved pretty well at first, but the cleaning apparatus broke after a year or two so I bought him a replacement and low and behold a year later... it broke again. Plus... the cleaning solution & accessories were expensive and they needed to be replaced all the time. Before the Syncro, I had given him a more basic Braun razor when we were dating. So... that's my experience right now.

What's yours?

I'm thinking about buying a Norelco instead. I'm okay spending the money for a good one as long as it's worth it and going to last for more than a year. He uses it everyday (well... except for vacations...) so I'm okay with an investment.

THANKS for your help!

THANKS for your help!

Here's my experience. As I have no ego involved in this whatsoever, feel free to discount it completely in making your choice.

First, shaving is a very personal experience. Each man's beard grows at different rate, with different texture, and different "grain." A shaver that is perfectly comfortable for one man's face could be torture on another man's face. The point -- whatever you buy, make sure it's from a store that has a decent return policy.

Second, my first shaver was a Norelco three-head unit. I loved it, but it was the only one I knew.

Third, I later tried some of the straight "back and forth" style shavers. I didn't like the feel, and returned them. Got another Norelco.

Fourth, I didn't learn to blade shave until I was well out of college. But once I started, I loved it. Given a choice, I'll blade shave anyday rather than use a shaver. Currently I only use a shaver for time reasons (it takes me longer to blade shave) or for portability (I can keep a shaver in my locker at work). I prefer the Mach 3.

Bottom line -- if I had to use a shaver, I'd go with the three floating head style which we usually associate with Norelco.

I usually use Mach 3 Turbo razors, but I've heard nothing but great things about Norelco Shavers. See the Compare Norelco Shavers chart in the Product Description.

FYI I bought the 7240XL as an Xmas present for myself :O based on the reviews and the amazing price I was able to get for it, but I won't be opening it until Christmas. Unless of course I sell it on eBay first. ;)

THANKS guys!

I'll check out that link BIG DADDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (sorry for the misdirection of credit there!) I did a quick search on epinions and looked at the amazon reviews, but didn't find anything really conclusive.

I would agree with the return policy. I almost considered buying the Norelco Artico on amazon, but figured if he didn't like it, returning it would be a hassle. So I'll probably just pay the extra $20 and get it at Target. Unless someone finds a better deal.... :-)?

I really appreciate your help!

(BTW: That chart ROCKS! I love quick and simple charts! Thanks!)

Guess.

I have used a Braun shaver for at least 30 years. I don't use the "cleaning system" at all. A micro-screen shaver is the only thing that gets me a close enough shave. I shave faster with e razor but I prefer to not scrape my skin.

I used to use the Mach 3 razor, but I was always getting infections on my neck from little nicks. Spoofee had a deal a while back on the Norelco 7110X and I absolutely love it. It is the low-end Norelco on the chart, but I haven't had an infection for a very long time.

I know you said he won't use a razor, but I have to say this:
About 3 years ago I switched from using canned shaving creams/gels/etc. to a mug, shaving soap, and a brush.
I actually enjoy shaving with this set-up, it feels so good on my face and neck.
Also, with the canned stuff, a blade would last about a week for me, now the same blades last for a whole month.

My dad had the Old Spice Shaving Cup and the Brush. That just seems so manly to me.

IMHO, I think he has to "be careful" when he's shaving with a blade and he's just not a morning person and doesn't take his time to shave and that's why he doesn't use them.

On the other hand, that just means I don't have to share any of the Schick freebies that I get in the mail!

Tigger,

I have a Panasonic shaver and I love it. I've had it at least three years now and I've only changed the blades and foil once. Panasonic recommends changing the foil once a year and the blades every two years unlike other brands which recommend every 6 months / 1 year.

I was looking at there current models and the ES8043SC would be the one I would get. It's got 4.5/5 with 83 reviews. It's also a wet/dry so it can be used in the shower or other wet places.

So... I gave him the Norelco Arcitec with the cleaning system for Christmas.

He has been using it, but I think the jury is still out. He said that it was different to shave with because it has the three rotating heads instead of the straight line shaver. I'll give him a couple of weeks to get past the learning curve and see if he likes it. Thank goodness Norelco has a 60 day money back guarantee! That was a good thing!

My observations are that it's a LOT quieter than the Braun we have and a lot slicker design. The shave seems close, but I haven't really taken the time to examine it that closely...we've been busy. :-)

I'll keep you posted!
