anyone the parent of a pre-teen? i just need to tell my story cuz OMG i can't believe this really happened....

so i was at the grocery store after picking the kids up from school. ashley, my almost 12yo, asked if she could sit in the car and do her homework. so i agreed, bringing the youngest 4 in the grocery store with me, leaving the car on so she'd have air conditioning. i spent probably 20 minutes, and got in the checkout lane. as the cashier was ringing me up, he asked if all these kids were mine. i said, yes, plus one more in the car. all of a sudden i hear "mom!" and it was ashley standing there in the checkout with me. so i said oh, there's number 5. i said, hey ashley, did you grab the keys? she said... uh... no...
so i immediately call AAA and they said they'd have a guy out within 10 minutes. they considered me a "priority" cuz the car was running and i had kids outside in the heat, etc.
so 20 minutes later, i called AAA back to see if the guy was EVER going to come. they had me on hold for about 5 minutes, then came back on and said he'd be there within 5. after i hung up, i went over to check the fuel level on my car, even though i'd just filled it up today. that's when i realized the car was off. oh shoot, i thought, either i ran out of gas or something else is wrong. i walked over to ashley and said "honey, did you shut the car off? cuz i had it running so you'd have air conditioning" and she said "yes, of course i did"... DUH!!! i asked "why didn't you take the keys out of the ignition?" of course i got the old "i don't know" response...
how could she shut the car ignition off and purposely leave the keys in the car when she went to lock it? it scares me that she's going to be driving in just a few years... i mean... GOSH!!!

ok, thanks for letting me vent.

ps- the AAA guy finally showed up and popped it open in less than 10 seconds... sheesh

yah, small mistakes like those are things everyone doesnt realize until they start driving. And even then some people forget the keys to their car :(

I'm a fairly new teen driver as well, and now that I'm accustomed to everything, I don't have too many problems.

At least applaud her that she shut the ignition off. Gas is too expensive to be wasting!

It could have been much worse - she could have left it running and unlocked. Then, who knows, you may have been without a car.

Turned car off: Yes
Removed keys from ignition: No
Locked car: Yes

2 out of 3 isn't bad! :)

Also, if she is 12, she at least 4 more years until she can get behind the wheel, possibly 6 years. Think of where she was 4-6 years ago, see how much she has grown... She'll do just fine. :)

thanks for helping me refocus, everyone. things are back to normal (read: chaos) again!

Most cars today have automatic lock/unlock on the key ring. When she starts to drive, she will use that thing all the time so 99% it won't happen again. But who knows...

Just a trick that I use...

I place a spare key behind the rear license plate. The hole of the key is where I place the screw from the faceplate of the license plate. Yeah, I need to have a screwdriver (but I have one of those flat ones in my wallet), but it has saved me a TON of trouble.

what a great idea! i'm gonna go make an extra key this afternoon and do that- even if i don't have a screwdriver with me, i don't imagine one would be that hard to come by. not like this is the first time i've been locked out of my car... heck, i locked myself out of the house twice before we got electronic keypads for both the garage door and the door leading from the garage to the house :30:

that reminds me, has anyone else heard that "blondestar" (onstar spoof) where the chick calls in and says she's locked herself in the car, with the keys outside?! i think peter did on that on family guy too... LOL
